Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "New Guy with a tranny question", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok I’m new to the site so don’t kill me to bad. I have done a search and read a lot of the forms already. This question may be a repeat but I could not find anyone with the same problem. I just changed my tranny fluid and filter and added all the right amounts of fluid and types of fluid, but I still have the same problem. When I take off and the RPM is around 3-4500 RPM the truck makes a hard shift from first to second and its getting rather annoying seeing as how I am trying to sell/or trade in my truck and get a newer one. My truck is a 2000 Tundra SR5 TRD package. The only upgrades on the truck are a K&N Cold Air Intake, and 31 Cooper Discovery ST’s. So if anyone has any ideas as of what would be causing this that would help me out greatly. Thanks in advanced.
As you probably know, new fluid will not help if the tranny has a problem. Try disconnecting your battery for a while and then reconnecting. Its possible the shift will be helped by a computer reset.
When did this shifting oddity begin? What other mods does the engine have? Any part that was added that is different from the factory original part(s) = a mod and can lead to drivability problems that are difficult for anyone to diagnose. Example: are you using a different brand or part# spark plug than the truck came with originally?
no the only mods that is has is the K&N and the 31's other than that its more or less a stock truck. i tried last night to unhook that battery and that didnt work. this problem started about six months ago but have been so busy with work that i am just getting around to doing it. and i didnt really drive my truck since i noticed the jumping was getting harder.
I also have an '00 that has 150k on it. It has ALWAYS shifted hard from 1st to 2nd under a load. My trans man doesn't seem to think it's a big deal. Time will tell.....
Yeah I just went and talk to my mechanic friend and he went for a test drive with me and he said that it was more of a delayed shift rather than a jump r hard shift. So he said he was going to talk to one of his friends and get back to me but if anyone else has any ideas im up for trying anything at this point in time
The 00-01 Tundra transmissions were not really a strong factor of the truck. Working at at dealer for some we have replaced many of them for this condition.

I'm new to the forum too. My 2002 Tundra with 105,000 miles on it now has started to clunk when I get underway. I'm told the transmission is ok, but that the truck has a 3 piece drive shaft and it needs to be replaced. Any body else have this problem? thanks, Jim Elliott
I don't about it needing to be replaced but the yoke probably needs to be greased. There is a grease zirc toward the back of the driveshaft that is on the shaft itself (not on a U-joint, they have their own). There is a preferred type of chassis lube that is mentioned on the site here somewhere, I'll have find it again.
