Default transmission problems production dates.

Tundras. Those with strange shift noises or behaviors, and those with transmission/torque converter problems: What is the production date on your Tundra?
(Look on your driver door and it is shown). Mine is 1/2000.

Just so everybody don't think there is a widespread problem.
Mine is 4/2000, and perfectly smooth, cold or hot.

My wife has a 2001 Tundra with 20000miles and no problems whatsoever. However, 1. I'm wondering if the major problems on the Tundras are those in the first year of production (and also, the first things out of the new plant ..nothing had ever been made their before.). 2. If a different trans was later put in, then was there a detected possible problem by Toyota to cause them to change the trans and/or the supplier? 3. I'm wondering how prevalant this problem is.

Granted, most of the Tundras are likely to be problem free. But, I know some local 2000 Tundra owners and 3 of us have had the brake problem. (and we ain't kids abusin our trucks!). Another with 30000 miles (2000 model) hasnt had any problems.

I believe Toyota should have relatively few problems. It should be like the 90 % basketball free throw shooter. Rarely misses.
Even then, one who plays/practices all day long doing one thing should be closer to 100%. I've previously held Toyota in that realm.

Yours has since failed, right? Mine was made 12/99 and is still "jerking" along.

Brake TSB's are mostly being done on Trucks that people tow with. Trust me on this the "brake problems" that we have are considered normal on most domestic trucks, so be thankful that Toyota has made good progress (the 03 system is very good in that respect, some pulsation, but not much). As for the Trans problem, it has NOTHING to do with the convertor! It is the OD planetary gear set locking up and basically since it's in the front of the trans it locks the trans. Only late 00 to early 01 has the porblem and it's because they started making that trans (which has been around for YEARS) here in the USA!

So if I've got the JAP transmission, the OD planetary is better?

rsvees,

What should we be on the look out for regarding transmission problems? Is there anything that can be done to prevent the problem? I own a 2001 Sequoia which I bought at the end of 2000 - when they first came out.

To be honest with you, there is NO way to prevent it, and I believe all Tundra trannys are made in the USA, but I could be wrong. We haven't seen any Sequoia trannys fail, I dunno why....

I think the sticker on the window on the new trucks shows where the parts are made.

it kinda seems like the problems i see in my '03 tranny is not so much the quality of the product, as it is the cpu settings of the shift points and their tightness. it's just too damn LOOSE!

if i floor it, it'll go up to 4000 rpm from 1rst to 2nd, and it'll hit the red line from 2nd to 3rd. if i let off the gas just right at around 2000rpm in 1rst, and 2500rpm in all the rest of the gears, i get a smooth, powerful shift that makes me proud to be a tundra owner. but if i miss the queue, i get that same THUNK and a jerk that'll give you whiplash that we all love so much.
