Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Disappointed with vibration on a 2003!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok... So I'm not crazy and the only Tundra owner that feels this!! This is the reason I replaced my front brakes and rotors cuz I thought that they were the culprit. Alignment.... Nope! Changed the tires..... Nope!! Everytime I've taken it in for this issue, they never can seem to duplicate what I describe happens between 30-45 mph. All they can tell me is to bring it back in when it's actually doing it! I've been to 2 dealerships now regarding this issue...... What else can I do to get this taken care of??
I was thinking of printing this thread out and taking it down there with me when I have it checked out again. Maybe they'll realize it's actually a problem and I'm not the only one with it!!!

Ok, so Ive got an 04, so one would assume I would have the upgraded diff right? Well I get that sweet vibration starting at 25-45 (before the fluid warms up) and when I put it in 4wd (straight line of course) it stops. I will go to the dealer armed with this info and see what they say. Will keep you all informed.
Has anyone heard if this imfamous 35mph vibration / humming issue affects the tacomas?
I took my 03 tundra in yesterday armed with a printout of this discussion thread of course and took a service tech for a test drive. He acknowledged the sound during the drive.
He said that they're currently working on a tacoma with the same condition and they weren't sure what the fix is. He said until they get that one resolved, he doesn't want to start tearing my truck appart. He informed the service writer to write up repair order to have on file and that they would contact me when they find out what's going on.
The service tech seem interested with my printout and asked if he could hang onto it. I told him that's why I brought, I have my own copy
I made sure to emphasize that the solution is to replace the front dif and that in some of the threads there's even some dealerships listed and the names of the mechanics who've worked on these around the country.
I'll keep calling them if they don't get back to me by mid week as they stated.
Went to my dealer, took the service rep for a drive, he acknowledged the noise and said he had it on his 03 as well. Said there was no fix that he knew of. Im not sure what to do right now...as soon as I get my bigger tires on the chances of them fixing something driveline related will be greatly reduced. Should I push for a new diff or just deal with it? Please advise.
I have a 2003 tundra. 4x4 Extended cab. I just put 2.5 lift kit and new 265/75/R16 tires. I have vibrations problems from 40 mph and up. At 70 mph I feel it in the seat. I have had the tires rebalanced many times. Can anyone help?
I have the same problem and I checked for that fancy balancer thing... funny thing was the shop I went to was on the list for that balancer. I'm going to have words with them on my next weekend. Groan.
Last thing I want to do is burn another overtime check on an alignment... rather do a balance...

So... I just installed my steering bushings... not an easy job for a guy without many tools (2.5 hours)... A very pleasant and worthwhile improvement ... However, the steering wheel vibration remanifested itself from 40-70 miles per hour... but subdued. Even with 4x4 on at 50-55 I still felt the same vibration through the wheel. (Refused to go any faster in-four.)
My logic would be to move onto speed/force balancing or an alignment? Should I only balance the front as opposed to the rear?
Anyone?

No do all 4. The force balancing with the Hunter machine will look at all 4 wheels and tires to ensure it gets most, if not all, of the vibration out. It worked on my 03.

I have put up with a vibration for the last 40K, now 46,000. Dealer told me at about 25K that it was the tires. Before that, when the tires were under warranty, they could not find anything that was not normal. Today, after purchasing new tires, I am told that it is a normal vibration as the mechanic drove a new Tundra and it has the same vibration. At least this means that they feel something.
My old tires were spun on Hunter and didn't help. The new tires were also spun by the dealer. Don't know if Hunter or not.
This vibration is subtle and causes a slight rumblng sound and slight shake in the stearing wheel. If one is going fast between 20-25 it won't show up. It occurs with deceleration as well as acceleration.
No other vibrations at any other speeds. Vibration shows up with or without applying the brakes.
Doesn't have anything to do with 4WD as the vibration is there with 4WD on or off.
Nothing has fallen off as yet so I guess I will keep driving it until Toyota comes up with an idea.

What's up with all these vibration issues on the Tundras? I am now getting a vibration on my 05 Tundra 4x4. The truck only has 11,000 kms on it and 7000 of them on new Revo tires. I recently switched the drive train and engine oils over to pure synthetic, the vibration was there before the synth oil change and is still there after. I took it in last week to get the tires rebalanced and they were out a bit. I took a highway trip to go fishing today and the vibration is STILL there, getting the tires rebalanced made very little improvement. Mine isn't at 25 to 40 mph but starts at about 50 mph and goes up from there. I don't really feel it through the steering wheel but more through the seat, floor, armrests, etc. the passenger seat usually shakes a bit too. It is kind of intermittant at times, sometimes very annoying and other times hardly noticable, type of road surface does not seem to affect it either. I can actually hear the road noise oscilating or buffeting with the vibration, kind of like a Vaa,Vaa,Vaa,Vaa,Vaa,Vaa type of sound and it is VERY ANNOYING

Sounds like messed up threads on the tires, or they are pretty out of round.
Yeah I've wondered about that myself but how do you tell if they are out of round? The tire shop where I bought them rebalanced them and inspected them and said they look normal. I hear all this talk about "road force balancing" but none of the tire shops in my part of the country have this type of equipment, they all just use the standard computer balancing machines.

If you go online at the Hunter site they list all the shops that have road force balancing. That's how I found my local shop.
