The BFG's that came on mine can be bought for $45 per tire. Michelin LTX M/S are about $145 per tire. In round numbers, Toyota saves about $500 per vehicle. At 100,000 vehicles per year, thats FIFTY MILLION BUCKS. No, they aren't dummies.
About a month ago I took the truck to Toyota Walnut Creek, CA and was informed that a TSB addressing the front end vibrations was to be issued some time in March 2003. I was just informed by them that no TSB has been issued that "they are still working on it". As far a when, they had no idea. Personally, I don't think they are working on it at all.
Guys, I think for now, we're SOL, big time. Unless there's an overwhelming evidence of a vibration problem like ours (at 30+/- mph and goes away when the 4wd is on) I don't think intermittent complaints from one or two disappointed customers, will be addressed. They sell thousands of these trucks and as long as their sales volume is unaffected.........who cares!
Just wanted to vent........
Sure Toyota is aware of the vibrations. Really don't think they think it is bad enough to issue a TSB to fix something they can't put a finger on.
After the last go around, I plan to take the issue to the corporate level (arbitration) just to create waves. Will I prevail? Not on your first born but it will at least let the big dog know that I'm not satisfied with a 30K martini shaker! Will be very hard for the wife and I to purchase another Toyota after the run around we have experienced over the past 2 1/2 years. Just wish the "Quality" in their advertising also applied the the customer service/retention area!
Wonder how other Tundra owners got their dealers to fix the problem. Where is the equality amoung owners.
I smell discrimination.... guess they don't like Jade Green Tundra's!
My 02 went in the shop 2 days ago to fix the 30 to 40 mph vibration, i get a call this morning that it is done, but i still have the problem, he did mention that Toyota knows and the dealer will let me know when they find the fix?? I had a 96 T100 that i never had to take to the dealer once, this trip makes about 4 times for this truck. I reallydo love the way this truck drives and handles but i do find the vibration unacceptible.
Did they do anything to your truck or just acknowledge there is a vibration?

When i first went to them about this they said they never head about it ,this time i sat down with the service manager and he told me that thay are working with mine and another one and that thay put a transfer case in mine and new tires and rims on the other. He did say that the noise went away on the other truck for 2 weeks and then was back. So yes thay did admit that there is a problem and a fix should be coming very soon( I hope). I told him that i had a 96 T100 and that i never had a minutes problem out of it and his comments were that it was a different beast??? I do like this truck over the T100 but its spent more time at the dealers than all of the other 4 toyota 4x4s i have owned. Lets all hope that the fix is just around the corner.
Don't get your hopes up on a vibration fix from Toyota. Heard the same song for 2.5 years now. They haven't a clue to what is causing the vibrations. The "few" of us that have the vibrations are miniscule to the whole Tundra population. Your best bet is to presue it @ the Corporate level. After 3 attempts to fix the same problem constitutes a problem and you will find that Toyota will string you along till you get frustrated!
Good luck.....
You guys might not want to hear this but considering what you have to go through to get Toyota to fix the problem it might be easier to fix it yourself. Try to isolate it through the process of elimination.
Is it the rear or the front? What happens when you remove the front drive shaft? What happens when you remove the rear drive shaft? Can it be felt with the truck on jacks stands and the wheels turning? If it's an out of balance drive shaft can it be balanced at a specialty shop? If you test drive a new Tundra at a dealership do you feel the same vibration?
Mine has a slight shake at 70+ mph but my tires are in need of a balance. Mine is also a 2WD model.

My 2001 also has vibrated since day 1. Sounds like Toyota is not going to try and correct this design defect if the 2003 models still vibrate. I was thinking about buying a 2004 model but forget that. Screw me once but not twice if I know about it.
Well the dealership tried to fix it or so they say. The service manager said that they replaced the rear diff assembly, not the front and guess what.............no surprise here, I still have the same damn vibration I have had from day one. Why they even considered the rear diff is beyond me. It doesnt take a genius to realize the vibrations are in the front not the rear. Well I guess its back to the dealership for me.
Have any of you noticed that the vibration goes away the instant you go to 4WD? I was told that you are hearing a "harmonic sound" produced at that 30-40 mph speed as a result of only one side of the front differntial being engaged when in 2WD.
I was also told that I was SOL on getting it fixed like everyone else.
Seems like this problem is quite common to a lot of us 4x4 Tundra owners. So far the general concensus is we're SOL. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to take this problem to a level beyond the local dealerships who won't move w/ out a TSB which is never coming?
It has been mentioned in a previous posting that switching to a synthetic oil in the front diff may help calm the vibration some, which makes sense and was also recommended to me by an independent mechanic. I have yet to try this because I want that diff to continue vibrating until toyota fixes it at their own expense.
