Exclamation Friend who works for Toyota with same prob.

My buddy has a 01 4x4. He also has the vibration. He rode in my 02 4x2 and was jealous of the ride quality. We both used to have jeeps and offroaded heavily. He is under the impression that its his tires (big and knobby) causing this vibration. After reading this post I am better informed as to what to tell him. He currently is not a member of TS, BUT......HE WORKS FOR TOYOTA. I will pass this on to him and see if he can get results. If he does I will post what they did for him, so that the rest of yall will have some ammunition for yalls dealers.

Well good new so far. I got my truck back yesterday from the dealership, they replaced the drive shaft on the passenger side and "no more" vibration! I have only put 200 km's or so on the vehicle so far but it was immediately quieter when I left the dealership. I did ask the service manager if this was a redesigned drive shaft and he said he wasn't sure about the "insides" of the drive shaft (huh, whatever) but he did say it was a assembly fix by toyota and I didn't prompt him anymore. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thumbs up

Hey Boxer,

No more moaning and groaning at 30+/- mph? That's great!

I'm still waiting for that call from Walnut Creek Toyota.

I thinks its time for me to ring their bell again. Thanks for the "ray of hope".

I was going to post this last week - my vibration issues are gone. Was putting air in the tires (issue #1) when i noticed the rear exhaust hanger had separated. Took 5 minutes, put the hanger back together - no more vibration....

Might be worth a check for some of you... ???

Question Is there a technical bulletin yet?

I called my shop, they said no bulletin yet, so they will investigate the vibration....

Anybody here any different? Last thing i want is some tech guessing to what the problem is, and start messing around with the front end

I have a 2003 tundra. 4x4 Extended cab. I just put 2.5 lift kit and new 265/75/R16 tires. I have vibrations problems from 40 mph and up. At 70 mph I feel it in the seat. I have had the tires rebalanced many times. Can anyone help?

What kind of wheel balance did you get? The only one that works well is with a Hunter Load Balance machine (GSP9700).

When I mounted my new tires on my IS wheels the local tire company did a high tech spin balance but the vibration was so bad it almost shook me out of the truck.

After doing some research I found a local shop who used the Hunter GSP9700 Wheel Vibration Control System and now 'zero' vibration 0 - 100 mph. It appears that Tundra's are very sensitive to out of round and/or balance conditions.

Click on the locate tab onthe attached link and hopefully you will find a dealer/service center near you that uses it.

Hey Everybody,
Good news (I think) on the 30-40 MPH vibration caused by cold fluid in the front transfer case. Took my truck in and tech told me he went to "toyota school" couple of weeks ago regarding this problem. He said it has something to do with the "spiders" in the front transfer case and I asked if that is the same thing as the "windmilling" of the front transmission drive shaft due to cold fluid and the front wheel driveshafts spinning ...he didn't give me a concise answer but did say that it causes the 30-40 mph vibration until fluid warms up. Anyway they are being instructed to replace the front transfer case, they have ordered me one, I asked if it is redesigned to eliminate this and he didn't know for sure but since toyota has recognized the problem and they are instructing techs to do this, it must be a different front transfer case. My work order says "carrier assy. dif $1,428.25" (warranty covered of course). Maybe this is just the passenger side drive shaft as someone else had replaced but the tech said it was a complete transfer case. Any way I will post back when they replace it and let everybody know if it is cured.

Unhappy My recent shop dealings.....

They couldn't experience the vibration....figures.

Anyways, from reading the past posts it sounds like the problem is likely to warrant a new front differential, because the stock one has a problem when the diff fluid is cold.....is that what we are leaning to here?

Someone else recently had the drive shaft replaced, and that also seemed to fix the problem? This confuses me....we are talking two different parts here...one of them is bad, or maybe both?

Giving the conflicting reports here, I look forward to getting the final verdict on this problem.....because there clearly is a common vibration problem on all 03 models

Personally my vibration issue is much more pronounced when it is indeed cold....

Once more....a technical bulletin number or something official from Toyota so I could point my shop directly to the correct information would be great...if anyone comes across such a #...much appreciated....

My vibration from the front diff was when it was cold, after 10 mins of driving the rubbing noise and vibration were not as loud. When cold and between 25-45 mph it was very obvious, put the truck in 4 wheel drive and it was gone. No Toyota SB yet,but they know of the problem and swapped my front diff, problem gone!

Well, I got my front diff replaced yesterday (finally, after six months of complaining) and it appears that the problem is solved. Well it is for now at least. The real test will be when the weather starts cooling off. Good luck to the rest of you guys, hopefully Toyota will stop dragging their feet and address this problem with a TSB soon.

My 2003 Limited 4x4 has no vibration whatsoever (the sound you hear is me knocking on wood). Just turned 1000mi. I bought it in May03 so perhaps it reached the production line after a fix was applied? After reading this thread I'll certainly be more aware of vibration behavior. I also added the Daystar 1in spacer to level the truck, then got it realigned at Toyota. I have the BFG Rugged Trail T/A radials.

This is to Hawker, could you give us the name of the dealership that replaced your front diff.? I would like to give it to my dealership so that they can talk to them and see that some of the trucks out there are getting repaired with the replacement of the front diff. as an assy.
I called my dealership they still haven't seen any information yet.
