Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "99 toyota tacoma hesitation at low rpm", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I have a 1999 tacome 2.4 automatic that sputters at lower rpms not all the time but pretty often. Enough to not want to pull ut in traffic. No codes came up I have had it plugged into a dealer style reader drove it around and everytimg seemed normal. I have replaced the MAF, coils, crank sensor, fuel filter, cleaned low idle air circuit, cleaned and inspected injectors, spark plugsand it seems to have this problem. I am running out of ideas now I am down to it may sound funey buy every time it seems like the fuel pressure is taken off the system for a bit then everything is put back together it seems to run its best. just a thought
Try new PCV valve, it is cheap ($3.00 @ Autozone) but cure your problem. I think your PCV valve it clogged. Your truck will run better with new PCV valve.
The truck only has 50,000 miles on it this is why this problem is so strange. I picked it up at a towing recovery lot. It appears that someone has changed the tranny fluid due to the nasty orange high temp silicone on the pan. I think they thought that that was the problem. Another strange thin is when it is sputtering and you pop it in neutral at with out letting off the gas it's like it never happened but when right back into drive still the same thing. I have even rode around with a fuel pressure gauge on it to see if that was dropping while it was acting up.
Wow thats alot of money to spend without knowing whats wrong. Check for vacuum leaks like disconnected lines and stuff. If you find nothing its possible your EVAP canister purge solenoid is stuck open causing a lean A/F mixture.

tell me about it. I have checked for vacuum leaks sprayed almost everything down with carb cleaner when it was running and no idle changes. as for the evap canister purge solenoid how can I locate this and can it be fixed without replacing it?
oh well i dont know exactly where it is on that. but if you can find it, take it off and try to blow through it. You shouldnt be able too. If you can blow through it than its probobly your problem.

i'll give it a try but I am still up for suggestions I need to find a toyota mechanic this has got to be a common problem it so stupid. This is gotta be the reason why these people dumped this truck for 1500 cause no one could figure it out need major help
well I think I found the evap solenoid it has one tube on one side and to one the other when I blow through the one tube air come out of one of the other tubes.
just one? Thats probobly the vent solenoid. thats supposed to always be open, it brings in fresh air. Thats great that you found that so quickly, I think we might be able to eliminate the purge solenoid as a possiblilty. But please dont replace the TPS and plug wires unless its the problem.
