rich29 cal =stated he used Mercon V to flush his trans, My owners manual for my 2001 SR 5 V-8 says to use DEXRON 11 Or 111.
Does the 2002 use Mercon V? Someone with a 2001 that has flushed the transmission with mobil syt. what did you use?

M1 ATF Mercon V is understood to be compatible w/ Dex II or III. My '02 calls for Dex II or III and I used M1's Mercon V.
I am getting ready to do this and have a few questions:
1. My book says the volume of the ATF is about 2 qts with a drain and refill. I know there is some ATF left in the system but why does it take 12 more qts to flush it out? Is there THAt much still in there?
2. What about the gaskets Haynes mentions on the filter? You didn;t reference them so I wonder if they were in good shape?
3. When applying the gasket (on the pan), shouldn't you go both inboard and outboard of the screw holes to seal the screw?
4. After you reassemble the pan to the truck, should you let the RTV cure for an hour until it forms a skin before you refill and then flush?
Thanks for your comments. Your post with pics is great and I would not have even tried this without seeing how it's done.

1. Yes
2. Yes, mine was fine
3. Someone suggested in this thread somewhere that you should. Of course, I didn't and, knock on wood, no leaks so far.
4. Yes, the instructions for the RTV specifically says so. If I remember right, I waited longer than an hour.
Awesome job! I have to replace my cooler...its leaking/seaping from one of the spouts. I think Ill replace my fluid at the same time. Your pics and description really made it look easy!
Thanks!
Thanks fellas , this anwers my occasioanal almost slip feeling in town when it shifts. Gonna do the flush. Wondering if Dexron 3 ok to use. Thanks in advance...
yea great job just wish the boneheads at toyota would give me the same opputunity when my new 08 dbl cab gets 30k on it. don't care what they say i will change my fluid and clean my pan and screen when it comes time cause any truck I own is gona catch hell and earn a living otherwise i'd be driving a corola and pocketing the change. The true test of this truck ain't now, there all nice when new, but what she drives like ten years from now. No dipstick, like I said bunch of boneheads.

Yep we'll see in a few years if trannys start to blow.

I don't think your have a problem since Bmw and Benz have been using this design for a number of year's without any issues. I know the core reason they did this move was to kept it sealed compleated againted dirt but to serve this who's benifit mechicals. Tundra had this design since the 2005 Model rolled off with the 5 speed and 6 speed(07).Tundra kept the design for the 6 speed as well since Aisin makes both.

I'm going to attempt this pretty soon. I'm def. going to drop the pan and clean everything there. My Haynes manual reports that a 2WD transmission oil capacity is around 1.7 quarts. When you drained your tranny, is this approx. how much oil comes out? roughly how much old oil is in the transmission?

Around 4qt. to drain the pan, 12qts. for whole deal.
These are numbers from memory. Search something like "ATF capacity" to be sure. I think there are posts in this thread that might confirm my numbers, but I can't be sure.

Don't forget to clean the magnets.
thanks.. I also have one more question
Some people use wire wheels to clean off the old sealant quickly. I assume that there is a low possibility of damage since it's recommended by most over plastic scrapers. What about the old sealant on the outside of the transmission itself? A wire wheel safe for that too? It seems like sealant flying everywhere could land where you don't want it to. Anybody use a wire wheel for this? What should I watch out for?
