This is a discussion thread titled "Need some advice on mods", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Hi I have 02 tundra. It has almost a hundred thousand miles. I was wondering what mods I could do for better gas mileage and at the same time power. In the summer i mess around at the local drag strip and i want to decrase my time but keep my mpg. I know that Toyota made a supercharger but they were having problems with the ecu and charger working together. Fuel delivery was a main issue, saying that they were running crapy. I talked to the service department of one of the dealerships and they said they had one catch on fire kind of skeptic about that and other ones that came up running really crapy.IS THIS TRUE WHAT IS THE FINAL VERDICT ON THE 4.7 SUPERCHAGER IS IT THE RISK OF GETTING. But if i were to use the uni chip would that solve the problems. I know that there is exhaust and air intake but is that it.

There are no quick fixes to make a Tundra get better mileage except to trade it in for a Prius. The Tundra motors came from the factory very well tuned and efficient, and there are no bolt-ons that will improve mileage. Don't waste your money on an intake. They won't help your mileage, and you will lose low-end torque. A Unichip may improve your performance, but it will cripple your gas mileage. (Mine went from 19mpg to 15mpg with the Unichip.)
I wouldn't spend the money on a supercharger for a truck that old.
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-assed set of tires on his truck.

for a truck with that many miles on it, i would change spark plugs, replace with new air filter and clean the MAF and Throttle Body. this will most likely increase your mileage some.
Highway cruising no faster than 70mph, you'll be amazed at the mileage. Highest I've seen with all the mods was 19mpg. Stock, it was about 20 or 21 at most.
If you just want kick down the strip, S&S long tube headers (note S&S Header, not SS Autochrome, not the same thing), Spintech Sportsman XL exhaust with stock piping, underdrive pulley and Unichip will certainly wake the motor but it won't change the mileage when you're cruising.
