With a K&N you spend an extra $5 every 5000 miles for the convenience of that nut on the end of the filter. However, a cap type oil filter wrench also makes getting into tight spots easy. And with a cap type oil filter wrench you spend $5 for the cap only once.
I think $11 is a deal considering the great results i've seen from the amsoil filters. It only comes out to about 5 or 6 dollars more per 5k miles than any other filter.
There are OE oil filters.
There are premium Oil filters.
Then there is crap. Fram and Purolator being the best CRAP out there.
Using this crap, yu are being penny wise, pound foolish.
Also, feel secure in knowing that if yu use an OE filter that the dealers will be your friend. And that is fine.
However for those "in the know", a premium filter is way superior to these rebranded, not truly made by Toyota OE Toyota filters. And guess who makes them?
BTW $31.90 is the best discount price for a case of OE spin-ons.(D1's)
But I like my premium filters the best. Even though I have a few cases of OE's lying around. I see the difference. It is apparant to me.
I will use the OE's...but I use Two(2) per OCI. The Oe's are built somewhat ok...but they use horrible filter media.
Anti OE bot
I noticed you mention a "Premium oil filter" but you never state the brand;
I have cut open OEM, & Puraltor Pure One, also a Fram. I would rate the the Fram as bad for toliet paper, but the OEM,Puraltors as even, in construction, and filter media.
Purlator brand is a highly used filter media specific product used in many aplications mainly aviation,In my experience, which calls for much higher filter micron media than anything Toyota or any other OEM asks for.
So explain this to me please, why you consider Purlator crap.

No, it's good for up to 25k miles. Depending on what oil you're running.
If you're running the top of the line amsoil which has 1/25k OCI, then you only change the filter when you change the oil.
Now please don't go there on OCIs and what Amsoil says.
These boutique companies can say anything they want, I don't believe running a 25K OCI. Do you remember BMW used to suggest 20K OCIs and now they are down to 15K and in a few yrs they will bring it to 7.5K? Many BMW engines are toast before the first OCI comes up...
25K OCI with lousy Toyota engines is calling for trouble -- FYI, 25K OCI on any engine is inviting trouble... Beware.!!

You are right Kathy but the wrenches often slip on the filter.

Lets not compare apples with oranges. aircraft vs atuomobiles...
First and foremost ,it's about the media and the media inserts construction.
Purolator is a notch above Fram due to contruction only, and with certain exceptions.
On the whole, they are basic, not premium filters. The PureOne is one exception as a Premium filter(semi Synthetic media). But the can is equal to a standard grade version. Remember, construction and design vary to an extent based on the filters application. This is true for most Oil filters.
