Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "MPG's", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm looking to make some MOD's to my V8 Tundra to get some better MPG's. Currently I get about 17mpg/hwy with the cruise set at about 70 with the tailgate down and the A/C off/on.
I plan on getting a roll up lid such as Retrax or Pace Edwards.
What advice can anyone give from personal experience on other products that would improve my MPG's? Please include product name and link to their website!
I imagine I will also get a dual exhaust and a performance air filter, but I want advice on which are the best.
Also, I know there are already posts on this site in reguards to my post, but I don't want to look all day/week/month for them.

Originally posted by hovisimo 17 mpg is pretty good, anything at or above the EPA rated MPG on the sticker is commendable with these engines. remeber, it's a V8 pickup. i get 9-12 mpg.
I get 7 - 15 mpg. Since April I have averaged 13 mpg. Can't complain because it's so much more fun than a 4 cyl. Taco.
Ironically, the best I got with the Taco was 18 on a 700 mile straight interstate run but only averaged 15 with it overall.

...forgot to mention that the 7 mpg is when pulling our 26' Travel Trailer in the Smoky Mountains without O/D.

About two years ago I was seeing posts of Tundra V8 owners getting up to 25mpg's.
I guess they were lying to me!
I did meet another Tundra V8 owner in Irving, TX who said he was getting 19mpg stock. But then again, he said he never drove over 60mph. What fun is that?
17mpg is darn good. I typically get 12-14mpg (325-360 miles per tank) in Colorado at ~5000 feet elevation. I know I could get 400 miles per tank (~15mpg) if I took it easy, but hey, ya' gotta have fun once in awhile!
Seee-ya!
Jim.

I get between 11.7-13.5 usually. All city driving. Twice it went over 14. I got 14.1 and 14.7 but those were the only times it managed to pass 14. I want to do something about the exhaust. If it is going to eat that much gas, then I want to hear it! I lifted the truck and the mileage went up. Usually it seems that people's mpg drops when they do that. Still, bad mileage seems to be all it will do. I love this truck though.
I've been getting 15 mpg average per tank. I had a little road trip this weekend, and got 17 average, with 120 nonstop highway miles figured in. I'm happy with 15mpg, my 91 Toyota truck, with V6, 4wd, and 240,000 miles got 16 mpg. So, I'm happy to have a larger, more powerful truck with only 1mpg average less.
average is 12.1 to 14.5 with the running average right at 13 even

I get 14-17 .I am going to try what look like lower rolling resistance tires, and keep then at about 33psi.The Mich all season tires have much less aggressive lugs than the stock tires, which are all terain.Maybe this will make a measurable improvement in MPG,but it won't be a lot if it does.Lower speed, and different tires, and maybe syn oil are about all the changes that might increase mpg.If the tires increase it by .5mpg,I will be happy, and surprised.
None of the performance stuff-filters,exhaust,cams etc will improve your mileage-no matter what the manu. say.Keep tire pressure up,of course,at least the called for 26 29.Luck,Charlie PS use cruise as much as possible,of course(except maybe in hilly areas)
I'll keep it in mind about the tires. I'm about due to change them all out anyway. I've always been a fan of Michelins (sp?). I had one stock Dunlop that kept going flat fast. I replaced that with a Mich, and have it as a spare right now. I'll just finish the job here in a couple of months.
