Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Oil drain plug on Tacoma Regular Cab Prerunner", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I understand that the drain plug for the engine oil is similar to the plug for the transmission fluid and that some people have confused the two.
I will be changing my oil on my 4-cylinder 2.7L Engine (2TR-FE) regular cab prerunner and I want to make sure I unscrew the oil drain plug, and not the plug for the transmission fluid. After looking under my truck I have doubts.
If I took some pictures, anybody feel qualified to say yeah or nay to the drain plug? Does anybody have any schematics for the reg prerunner? Own one and changed the oil?

Cheers!
It all comes down to this.
If yu can differentiate between what the trans. looks like compared to the Engine... then yu really can't make a mistake.
But ,do send us pix, to point it out.
Get under there and look at every thing for 10 minutes. It should be apparent. Especially if yu have some reference pix from any manuals.
The engines oil pan sits directly under the engine block 99% of the time.
Hope this helps to give yu more confidence. Yu really have to lay under there for several minutes and it should be easy to figure out. It should just make sense.
A Mistake will happen if yu just reach under and NOT study which drain plug is which.
Lay under there and study all the components and wher the trans. is attached to the engine.
I can't explain it any better.

All the toyota's i've had, both the bolts use a 14mm socket to loosen.
However, Just like lifetech said, the oil drain pan is directly under the engine. The transmission drain plug is further back.
Also, the trans plug is a smaller bolt than the oil plug and screws in vertically. The oil plug usually is on an angle pointing towards the rear of the vehicle. This i'm sure is for folks that pull the vehicle up on ramps to change the oil.
I haven't had any vehicles with the 2.7, so i'm not 100% sure, but i'm pretty confident yours will be the same way.

I tested it and a 14mm socket will loosen the plug in question; however I've read that 14mm is also the size for the transmission fluid plug.
I took pictures. I think it is pretty clear which plug I'm looking at: it is the grey plug on the bottom of the black pan. I can label it if necessary.

Most people are having problems determining whether they are draining the Automatic Transmission's plug or the oil drain plug. First you have a manual tranny so this is no brainer. Second I hope you don't take any offense to this if you can't tell which plug is for the oil and which is for the transmission you need to pay someone to change your oil.

Ok, I'm about to change my oil and take out the break in oil and put in mobil 1 5-30. I'd rather be safe than sorry and double check which drain plug is the oil pan. Looking under my 08 Tacoma, is the drain plug the one that is closest to to the front of my truck?
Re: Oil drain plug on Tacoma Regular Cab Prerunner
There are plenty of members who have more knowledge than I do and they may be able to answer your question as to whether the drain plug the one that is closest to the front of your truck.
However, if you look at the pictures I took, you will clearly see the drain plug and oil pan on a 2007 prerunner regular cab. You should also get a pretty good idea as to the location. In the case of my truck, the plug and pan were in a very conspicuous location.
