Bought my 2000 Tundra V8 4X4 access cab 10/31/01, with 30k miles. Built July 2000. Occasionally felt a slight bump during shifting over the years. 2 weeks ago, every time I accelerated from a stop and reached 40 mph, there was a very loud bang. Truck would jerk so hard it felt like I hit something. Took hubby for a test ride and it performed on cue at 40 mph. He thought I hit a bad pothole. Problem kept getting worse next day and engine light came on. Dealer diagnosis - overdrive solenoid went out at 121k - new tranny req'd @ $4,300. Way out of my price range. I guess I'm lucky that I nursed it as far as I did. Hubby assured me that I could still drive it to work (all highway) while he looked for a used tranny, as long as I didn't use OD till I passed the dreaded 40 mph. When rush hour traffic slowed, entire truck started shuddering badly. Engine shut off in the fast lane. Every time I restarted it in every gear possible, it would die as soon as I put it in Drive. This was 7 am, on a bridge, in the dark, rain & dense fog. While waiting for the police, on the 25th restart, I held the gas to the floor and yanked it into drive. It finally blasted forward enough to make it across the bridge and to the median. I had two wonderful celicas; 85 & 95. I'm sad about my Tundra that I love so much and planned to keep forever. Word to the wise - do not ignore the subtle warning signs because it goes from bad to worse in a hurry. Lucky I didn't cause a terrible accident when it died. As soon as financially possible, I'll be trading my bad boy in for something else. Best of luck to all of you. Be safe!! {;>
Sounds to me like you may have solenoid issues, get a few quotes from some tranny shops (not just one ). The stalling could have very well been caused by a faulty lockup solenoid. Solenoids can fail for numerous reasons, they can also get clogged from metal particles ( normal wear ) and cause rough shifts as their reaction is delayed. Lack of regular service can accelerate the problem.
If you like your truck, fix it with a used tranny or a re-build or repair. It certainly won't hurt to have it gone through to inspect the hard parts and replace the clutchs and steels ( plates between clutchs). Find a reputable tranny shop to get an opinion. Toyota will love to sell a new tranny to you, but it doesn't have to be that expensive at all. I have an '01 with 315,000KM ( 200,000 + miles ) and it is still going strong. Regular maintainence/fluid changes are key to long life.
Not really since the deposits that will clog the solenoids are usually metal ( normal wear particles) that are attacted due to the magnetic nature of the solenoids. It really takes an up close and personal cleaning in that area. I was thinking over the post by Baysunset and am thinking that this all sounds like solenoid issues. The fact that the truck stalled sounds very much like converter lockup, and the fact that the truck could be moved when quickly shifting into drive ( that is what I would expect to see ). Also the issue with the rough OD shift at 40 MPH, but the apparent manual application of OD at highway speeds being o.k. ( if I follow the post correctly ). This sounds like a shifting issue (solenoid related) as opposed to bad OD parts.
Before I would condem the transmission and submit to an expensive/complex repair, I would suggest a close inspection with the solenoids first. If there is no excessive debris in the pan ( expect for fine particles covering the pan magnets, just no chunks), cleaning or replacing the solenoids may be a good first ( and hopefully last ) step.
I really appreciate the info from both of you. Hubby is pretty religious about regular maintenance. We actually had the dealer do the ATF flush in September. He was hesitant to have it done, because when he had a different dealer do that on his F350 a few years ago, the same thing happened to him. He even asked told them what he happened to his truck and asked 'if anything goes wrong with the tranny, will you stand behind it?' He called them, no dice. Is this a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'?
We actually went to a 2nd shop who also quoted over $4,000. We found a used tranny with 50k miles that should be here in a week. I will pass along the info on the solenoids, clutchs and steels. I really do love the truck and do not want to go back to a big payment. Many thanks!
Flushes are designed to ensure that all the fluid gets changed. Unfortunately they don't always remove the buildups associated with wear. Good luck on your repairs.

Before you go with the used transmission, have you ever considered a Toyota remanufactured unit?
Your local dealer may be charging you more than MSRP on the transmission when they quoted you the price.
From "Toyota Parts" - OnlineToyota Parts and Accessories., a remanufactured unit for your vehicle only runs $1710.75. Even if you add in $500 for shipping both ways (delivery of new unit and return of old core) and $800 for labor, you'll be right at $3000.
A new remanufactured unit may contain updates to improve durability, whereas the used unit will not have these updates.
