Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "V-8 Spark Plug question", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Are there any of you DIY guru's out there that know how to tell if a tundra is equipped with "standard" or platinum spark plugs? Other than removing one of course
Do any of the Tundras come from the factory with platinums?...I don't think so. Isn't the only purpose of platinum plugs to allow for a 100,000 mile plug change interval?...and the Tundras get 30k from $2 copper plugs.
Looks like the maintenance maunal that comes with the truck is a generic one for most Toyota vahicle's. For what these things cost you would think a specific maint. manual would be included .Oh well.
In my 2000 Tundra owner’s manual it says my truck came with iridium plugs. Fortunately it came with the basic Denso plugs, which were replaced by me at 30,000 with your basic $1.50 Autolite plugs. It still runs great and gets the same 17.5-mpg it was getting before. 54,000 miles and still running strong!
A while back ago, I replaced my plugs in the Tundra and Sequoia. Went to the dealer, they said both had the Iridium $15 plugs and insisted on selling me these. I knew different - all came with the standard $2 Denso U-groove - a good plug anyways. Since my 2001 "inferred" that the original plug was Iridium, and the Parts Manager - now my best buddy, my Truck had the "wrong plug" installed from the factory. We checked other Tundras and Sequoias, all had the $2 normal plug. Long story short, I got 16 spark plugs for free (normal $2 ones). The over zealous parts guy, in an attempt to "up-sell" admitted his ignorance. Too bad - parts guys should have this basic information and realize that some folks aren't idiots and do know quite a bit about their vehicles. Now the guy asks me questions.
I also like how I got a case of the $10 -20004 original equipment oil filters, and not the cheaper replacements. Toyota sends me a mailbox full of "service and parts" coupons. On was "Genuine Toyota Oil Filters - $3.99 - quality craftsmanship, anti-drain back valves and BYPASS VALVES." The cheaper replacement DOES NOT have a bypass valve, while the original -20004 does. Thus - false avertisement at its best. If the parts guy would have just admitted the error - I won't have pressed it. Again, the "know-it-all" that knows less than he should, had to sell me 12 $10 filters for $4 apiece.
All TUNDRA's 2005 and newer have the irudium plugs which do not need to be changed until 100K. I have been fighting this battle with my local (small) dealership and went to 3 other's and they all told me the 05 TUNDRA's and newer have the 100K irudium plugs!

I use nothing but NGK spark plugs in everything I own....be it my Toyota, Nissan, Briggs & Stratton or Hasqvarna! In my trucks, I usually go with the NGK G-Platinums....they work well, last a long time and aren't expensive.
