Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Regearing 05+", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I know the carrier is the same as the FJ cruiser/tacoma/4runner.....i saw on the TTORA board that someone called inchworm and they figured the gears would work.
Anyone ever hear of this place. This is where I just ordered them from for my 06 dbl cab and the cost with install kit was around $280. I got the 4.88's to go with my setup which is 35's with 6'' lift. Thanks!

I sent ya a PM, but that sounds cheap...was that for the rear end with a pinion kit only?

wow! triple post! but i regeared my 05 using precision gears, if you look on the RCD part 2 sticky thread in the handling/suspension/axle section theres a part in there of me asking what gears i should use and stuff and there good info including part numbers. its towards the end maybe 6 pages from the end or so

I'm a post whore !!!
I think I saw that...yours is a 2 wheel drive though as well?
Ok so I recieved my Precision Gear 4.88's for the rear of my 06 Dbl Cab and started calling/asking around where/who I should get to install these things. Well after asking a few different people they all said the same shop which is who I thought of going to in the first place (being that he has been around for ages). So I call the place up and after several hours he returns my phone call to say that he would rather not do the install because it would not be worth his time. He said the instructions were around 40 pages and it calls for all kinds of special procedures.
He then says he reccomends going through the dealer and that it should be my cheapest solution. Being that he quoted around $325 for normal gear installs im thinking there is no way in hell the dealer would even come close to that. Im still in the process of getting a straight answer from my dealer just for the heck of it but does anyone else have any suggestions of where I should go in Southern FL. Also where did everyone else have theirs done? Thanks in advance.
that doesn't make sense. it isn't harder then any other regear. theres i think 1 or 2 extra parts but they are small. the place i went to didn't use a instruction book they just knew how and did it. i would be interested to see how much the dealership would charge though. i figured they wouldn't even touch my truck.
Stealership said its 7 hrs @ $100/hr $700 +.....lol, no thank you. I still have to buy fluids on top of that. I am still looking for a shop around here that can do it for a better price and still gurantee their work.
The shop that quoted you $325 for it and recommend someone else is either they don't know how to do it or isn't confident enought to do it. Why wouldn't it be worth his time? If I didn't have to save for 3 new trolling batteries and rework 2 props for my boat, I'd do a regear too with 4.56 for better towing. Keep looking, I'd pay alittle more for someone who is more confident in doing the install.

The shop that quoted the $325 for labor usually does Chevy, ford, dodge & old Yota's, he says he has never done a newer rear end and when he looked into he said he would have to make a special tool and would prob take him a couple of days since it would be his first newer yota rear end. He meant it wouldnt be worth his time because he would charge me for the hrs the book says the job would take and it would actually take him a lot more therefor he isnt interested.
I think he's full of it. Disconnect driveshaft, unbolt pumpkin from axle housing, take 4 bolts off bridge that hold carrier, remove carrier, unbolt ring gear, push/press/pull carrier bearings, from pumpkin unbolt pinion bolt, press/pull pinion gear out, same with bearing, reinstall new ring to carrier and pinion to pumpkin, set shims, check contact, if good, install bolts and torque down, reinstall everything back. Like changing a flat tire. The tundra's diff is no different than the old toys. Just minor size and shape. What special tool is he talking about? If I had access, I'd do my own.

Sounds like you've done this before. I have no idea what special tool he is talking about. I wish you were located in Souther FL so you can do my install. Never got a chance to call any other shops yesterday so today I will see if I can get a break from my work other than lunch time which is when the fat kid eats.
