Here is what came out of my rear differential the first time I changed it. I have no idea when or if the previous owner ever changed it. Two days ago when replacing a blown oil seal Here we go again I found that I not only did not have a breather but there was no plug there. I am concerned about the amount of crud that probably has found its way in there.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to clean out the breather hole on top of the axle without taking the innards out of the differential?
Many thanks,
Lizard

Hey guys,
Need a little help here. I just had a shop put new 4.56 gears in my 02 AC 4x4. I am now passed the break in period and crawled underneath to swap out the fluids. I noticed the front diff was leaking a little (not enough to drip to the ground, but definitely a slow leak). Then I noticed the T-Case is doing the same thing. Before the gear swap, I had no leaking. What do you think could be the problem? Did the shop overfill maybe? Not properly sealed? Why the T-Case? He didn't touch that.
You think I should go ahead with my fluid change? Or hassle with the mechanic that lives 1 hour away? Thanks!
hassle him. No sense in changing the fluid yourself if he's going to drain it again when you see him.

nice mud.
Get a new breather and find the thread pitch, then re-tap the breather hole? Tap it slowly, pulling out every half turn, using a vacuum to extract as much "crud" as possible prior to going back in with the tap for another half turn.
That's all I got. Maybe someone else has some better experience with this...

Last time I had to do that, I strapped the shop vac crevice tool right up against the hole as I was tapping. The shnozzle was physically contacting the tap as it was turning. A little noisy but this noise beats another noise from the diff later on....

Just another note regarding mobil1 75-90 LS. Changed diff oil and immediately noticed shudder vibrations after backing up and turning. No I did not use lsd friction mod. $11 a quart for mobil LS shouldn't Have to. Searched other forums and found that I was not alone. Changed back to dino w/ friction mod and works just fine. Thanks for the DIY, very helpful
I followed your steps, but used Lucas Heavy Duty 80/90 Gear Oil. This was done over the weekend and the truck runs smooth. However, I'm being told that I should have also added an additive for the LSD. Is this true?

Here's how you test if you need the LSD/Sliplock additive in your rear diff.
As you make a right or left turn from a stop, listen to the rear end of your truck. If you hear a metal chatter sound, you should use an additive. If you do not hear anything, then you're fine. Many gear oils have this additive already in them but don't say it on the front of the bottle.

Is that chatter causing irreparable damage? I bought my truck from CarMax a few weeks ago and it does this (I have a LSD). I am guessing they or someone changed out the diff fluid and did not put any additive in. If no long term damage is likely, I will change the oil and add a bottle of additive. If any damage is likely, I will have CarMax make any necessary repairs (as it would be within the 30 day window where they will fix most items). Thanks.
