Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Got the Supercharger In", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Well, broke down, and ordered the Supercharger from Findley Toyota and they got it in on 2/25/03, and they actually ordered a couple extra to keep in stock. Getting it installed this morning, got to drop the truck off at 7:00am.
They normally charge $4700 tax included, then install for $300. Total overall cost they wanted was $5000. I showed them a printout for 4 other dealerships selling between $3950 to $3997, and asked if they would match. They said they would match the lowest price of $3950 and still install for $300, which is $180 cheaper than the normal install price for the charger install. Only thing is that I have to pay $298 for taxes.
I ordered the boost guage kit for $96 including tax, and they also charged me $26 to dye the black boost guage housing my factory color. They were out of these so I got to wait until next week for them to install it.
Now if you had read my posted times for running at the track, you will see the gains that I got with a Catback, and airbox modification. running 15.28 1/4 mile. This was at 58 degrees and a very low humidity I think it was 8%. I want to of course run the track again so that you guys can see some posted numbers since no one else has posted any that I could find for the supercharge application.
The problem is that they are conditioning the strip at Las Vegas Motorspeedway, so that I cannot run it until 03/14/03 at the "Titan Auto Insurance Midnight Madness" This is a bracket compitition that they are charging $30 to enter. It starts at 6:00pm. I get three runs to tune my vehicle then the compitition starts at 10:30pm. I will post my times that night. To bad the weather will not be that cool around middle of next month!
Hodgee,
Thanks for all your performance right ups. This is the one that I have been waiting for and I am sure others are too. The last track results we saw were very disappointing.
They also talked me into buying the Iridium tipped sparkplugs that are one heat range cooler than the factory. $120 for sparkplugs, man that is steep. Said that I didn't need them for sure, but said that durring the hot Vegas summers that they would make a difference, and keep the vehicle from pinging. The Part Repp guy told me that they were good for 90,000 miles, and that is when Toyota recommends they be replaced, supercharged or not. The Service manager also has a supercharged Tundra, imagine that, Big discounts for Toyota employees! He said that when the weather is hot, sometimes the 91 octane is not enough to prevent pinging, until he went with these plugs or octane boost, then no more problems.
Oh, they overnighted my Boost guage, so that they will have it before 8:00 am tommorrow to make up for the delay on the install.
I am hoping for 14 flat 1/4 mile times, I am also going to try to redo my exhaust system, to a true duel. I know that this will probably take away a little torque for regular driving, but should give me better performance at mid and top end for better 1/4 mile times. I am not sure what to do, since I do like offroading, and don't want to loose any down low torque! I am thinking that I will just get the JBA y-pipe, then have an exhaust shop put an extra custom y in the pipe with a cap! This way I can take the cap off for running at the track, and have it capped for the street. I know this would not show the overall performance capability of the truck for everyday use, but it would be fun and nice to have!
But if this will do 14.1, it will match Fords Lightning from 1999 to 2001 before they gave it 20 more horsepower. Same quarter mile time! Considering that our 4x4s weight 220 lbs lighter than the Lightning, and our tires are not street tires, but come close to the Harley Davidson supercharged truck size tires. The Harley truck is supposed to do 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds. The Lightning is supposed to be in 5.5 seconds, better traction, and 20 more hp. The Tundra guy that is running 14.3 is then faster than the Harley truck, and is probably running 6 sec flat to 60!
Well I would recommend not to get the cutout for the sound because it really doens't sound that good.... It sound like a motorboat or something horrible like that because of the high reving. I keep mine capped all the time. Now i don't know what it will do for performance with the supercharger but mine lost tons of torque. If you want we could meet up and i could let you hear it --- I would like to check out your S/C as well. -- Do you have have the limited slip? Also if you wanna race at the track I could borrow my dad's 99 lightning that is stock....
PM me
peace
Are you in Vegas? I will have the supercharger installed by tomorrow, but am very busy this weekend. I would like to check out your exhaust on your truck. I was not thinking of doing this for sound, but to get more power on the 1/4 mile. You said that you have had this done to yours, but lost torque, sounds like I should not do this then!
Please pm me with your number and I will give you a call. This way you can check out the charger. I also have the 30,000 mile service next week, so Friday or Saturday would be great. If we can pull it off somewhere, we should run the Tundra against the Lightning, this will give me a base idea of how fast the Tundra will be then. But the following week I will be at the track.
My friends from work that are going, are taking a WRX modified to 327 horsepower to the wheels. He had this put on a special dyno in california that works with all wheel drive, and gives a base number for the wheels. A Ford Harley Davidson 2002 that comes supercharged from the factory, and a 2001 Camaro SS that has been rear wheel dynoed at 408hp.
I know that these guys all blow me away now, I just want to beat at least the Harley truck. The guy with the Camaro ran before at the track with me and got 13.2 1/4mile times, with tons and tons of wheel spin. He had the factory rims stretched 1 1/2" from a specialty shop in the rear, and is now running 315/35/17s street legal drag tires, I think they are BFgoodrich's!
Yes I have the rear Eaton unit. I was told by the guy installing it that it is the beefyist Limited slip that he ever saw, especially since it is only for a 8" rear end. He said that the factory limited slips have one less clutch per side, and one less spider gear. He said the one that you order has three spyder gears that are heavier duty than stock, and the clutches are really strong. I only know that it hooks up real nice, and when turning a sharp corner the outer tire chirps a little due to the tightness. It still does not feel as strong as a locker though. I have had two lockers on other vehicles and they are the best, but this lsd is a lot nicer for street driving.
Dropped it off at Findley, going to sleep soon, so it will be cool to wake up and have the truck done.
Gotta give kudos to Findley toyota and the service rep Greg. I am one of those people that asks about 1 million questions, and Greg and Brian the parts assis manager were very helpfull at all times, and never seemed to be bothered with answering all my questions. Of course I double verified that everything that I wanted was set on the paperwork, and still asked some questions about things that I spoke with them briefly about the night before. I was real surprized that they already had everthing all set up for that they didn't even write down last night, but still put on my service order.
That is rare to get that good service. I bought a Celica GTS from them also, and was always treated real nice by everyone. The Tundra I bought at Fletcher Jones Toyota, but whenever I wanted to order parts like floor mats, or got my services done like the 15,000 mile and oil changes, they always made me feel like I was getting the cold shoulder, and seemed irritated that I would ask my million questions. I think for now on I will take my business to Findley. I had heard from a lot of people that they thought that Fletcher Jones was crap, and it only sunk in after constantly being treated badly by them.
I think that TS member mustang67408 is my installer! since the guy installing the charger told me about a 67mustang that he had!
I don't know what happened. My head is still spinning on how empty my checkbook balance is. I also got the Ivan Stewart Body kit and grill coming, The TRD rims I got to get new tires tonight or tommorrow on them. I just totally TRDed my entire truck. Body, motor, exhaust, rims and new BFG all terains, and I even ordered the hellwig swaybar today, and should get it from summitracing tommorrow since the warehouse is located in Nevada. Also replacing the air filter with TRD one for safety reasons, and recommendations to the supercharger. Got the higher pressure cooling system cap that they recommend for the supercharged applications. New Iridium spark plugs also. I got a Digital camera for my birthday, so guess what, pics are coming pretty soon.
The truck should look, handle and perform pretty awesome. I knew that I should have never sold the damn mustang! I GOT THE NEED, THE NEED FOR SPEED!!!!!!!!!!
I figured what the hell, I will keep this thing for at least 4 more years, I AM going to enjoy my Tundra owning experience! Next week getting a hard bed cap, and probably getting the X muffler Bassani true duel exhaust system that eliminates the y-pipe and crosses the exhaust in the muffler, 2 pipes in 2 pipes out! I have read that no one who got these lost any torque that they could notice, and it has a much better flow rate that should compliment the supercharger at higher rpms.
Well, got everthing done today, and I gotta say, that Findley was outstanding, very helpfull, and the supercharger works flawlessly. The install was very clean, and a lot of personal touches were put into it. I finally after getting home tonight took a close look at the setup on my truck, and the detail in the engine is fantastic. The installer even went out of his way and siliconed the vacuum line that goes into the cab to waterproof it. An A+++ install.
At max boost my guage is showing just a hair over the 7psi boost level. From a standstill I had no traction if over 50% throttle, but since I got my new rims today and went straight to Discount Tire to have them put on, I decided at a couple of empty stop signs to lay on it. The truck just spun the wheels violently and left a nice puff of smoke from the rubber. The truck did not go very far, just spun the tires. Well, I just had to moderate the throttle a little and wow, the 1 to 2 shift comes on so quick, it feels like a big block running this thing except for the whine of the supercharger. The pull is astronomicall to about 70mph where it feels still very strong, but does not plant you into the seat like at below 70. When I was on the freeway to get my tires I layed on it at 70 a couple of times and I was expecting a strong push at that immediate moment, it accellerated well, but did not feel real strong until it got to about 4000rpm, then it pulls mongo big time. I finally looked down at the speedometer and saw that I was doing almost 100. It came up so fast that it was unexpected, especially since it did not feel as strong when first flooring it.
I just got my TRD wheels, and got the BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A K/Os in the stock size. It is surprising how much bigger the All Terrains looked on the truck with these rims. After putting these on the truck they looked so much better than in the pics that I have seen. I noticed with the new tires that they right off felt stickier than the BFG Trail stock tires. I did not get on it tonight though since the rims are new and the tires are new, with new beads. I drove about 47 miles tonight on them, and played a little bit with the pedal but not much. At all times it felt much stickier, but I did not want to hurt the new setup until the beads set a little and the rims are retorqued. Also want to put at least another 50 miles on them. Then I will do some standing starts to see how much more throttle that I can apply. A tire upgrade is a definate necessity when getting the charger.
Once the truck is doing about 20 or more, there is no wheel spin, and I lost my 1 to 2 shift chirping of the tires. This is since the charger retards the timing 30 degrees before the shift to safely keep the tranny where it belongs! The one parts guy I talked to told me that the new supercharger comes with two new computers that fit behind the glove box. One is for the new engine management, and the other is the transmission controler.
The boost guage works off the stock lighting and also brightens and dims with the main controler. It is just a hair dimmer than the dash lights. It seems better that way so that you can see it, but it wont bother you during normal driving. Before I was thinking of putting the E-Glow lights in the cab, but then the Boost/Vacuum gauge light would not match now. I am curious to see my gas mileage now, that the vehicle uses 91 minimum. When driving home I came the back way around lake mead, and was surprized to see the motor was boosting about 1 1/2 to 2psi boost when going up the steep grade, but I barely was touching the throttle. It boosts at anything above about 25% throttle, but I don't think that the gas will be eaten up much faster unless you floor it all the time. After driving around about 70 miles tonight, the gas gauge from full is about where it normally is with that mileage, and I floored it quite a bit!
The last thing I was told, is that the supercharger takes about a week or two to totally adjust itself to the vehicle, and then it will make more power. If that is true, I can't wait, cause it feels fast as hell. The nice thing also is that after a couple of repeated runs, the supercharger did not feel like it fell off in power. When I had my supercharged mustang it would do one or two runs, then it felt much weaker with any consistant flooring of the motor, no intercooler. Maybe this is due to the ninth injector, or maybe cause it was 50 and below most all the day today, that it felt consistantly strong.
If Trds web site is correct and the supercharger makes 100 more hp and the cat back makes 10hp, and the Headers Make 15hp, then with these Denso Iridium plugs, and the TRD airfilter installed, that should mean that I got about 370 at the crank. Wow a lot for this truck, but not super great compared to those that have big block older trucks with about the same power. Difference, Supercharged made more torque, with a much lighter vehicle.
Well don't know what else to tell you, is it worth it? If you can afford it, it is! Really looking forward to running at the track and getting some times. I decided with how strong it feels, I don't think that any more exhaust than what I already got will do any good!
Hope this helps with some of the questions that others have had about the charger. Also got them new pics on my computer of the truck so far, just check my photo section.
Anyone that is in the Las Vegas area, since I got the new TRD airfilter, I am giving away the K&N drop in filter for the V8 Tundra. It is about 6 months old, got a little bit of dirt on it, but should be good for life if any one wants it, pm me with your number and what side of town you are on, and I would be happy to meet you somewhere to give it to you.
These go for about $40 on line not including shipping, and about $60 for in town. This saturday would be good for me.
