Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "exhaust question", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
looking to give my seq a deeper throaty sound. I dont really have the money or desire for headers and all that. Has anyone done just and exhaust tip or a muffler and tip that will tuffen up the sound? I wanna try to keep it arround $150
Originally posted by thecarguy does anybody know it the resonator can be removed and still be somg legal? My gut instinct says no.
If your goal is to make the exhaust more throaty, I'd suggest a new performance muffler and leave the stock resonator in place. The resonator doesn't take away from performance and with it removed it'll be way too loud. For additional details on what others have done, check this thread:
Here's what I'd recommend (excerpt from a PM to another member):
FOR SOUND AND PERHAPS SOME PERFORMANCE GAIN:
- For fake-dual (like I have), go with or without the JBA headers, leave the stock Y-pipe and resonator and go with a 1-INLET, 2 OUTLET Flowmaster 50 series with 2" pipe out the muffler to the rear and then use 2.5" to 2 3/4" chrome tips.
Note that Hodgeee claims no loss in power (and actually an increase) with 2" pipe out the back and he's using the same 3" INLET and 2.5" OUTLET Flowmaster as me. However, he has a 40 series and I have a 50 series.
Note that Flowmaster says that the 50 series has "...the same performance output as 40 Series, but milder on the outside of the vehicle, and is significantly quieter inside the vehicle".
Soooo, this leaves the difference in pipe: Me 2.5" and Hodgeee 2". The bottomline is you don't want to loss too much back-pressure, so go with the smaller 2" pipe out the rear. (If I had it to do over, this is what I'd do.) Also, ask the exhaust shop installer what he thinks. e.g. Pick his brain and see if he's done exhausts on other Tundra's/Sequoia's and what he recommends for pipe size.
Hope this helps...
Seee-ya!
Jim.

Man, you must be! Wait a sec...you have a Sequoia, that counts for something! Chrome tips that modify the sound? Not that I'm aware of. Even if there were, you get what you pay for...
Good luck!

Flowmaster makes their 70 series, and a few others, in a dual-in single-out, which should be direct replacement on the Sequoia. Most Flows go for under $100, and a shop shouldn't charge you very much to do the swap.
You can legally remove the resonator, provided that it is only a resonator. It probably will make the interior sound level go up a bit.
As far as tips....stop by you local muffler place and take a look. You're almost sure to find something you like.
everyone seems to be talking about a low end power loss, so I assume it happens. If I were to get the TRD dual system, what if I put an X pipe before the mufflers?

I lost minimal power if any. I tow a very heavy boat (4000lbs) and didn't notice any loss of power? I run the TRD exhaust.
Anyone have a dyno run before and after? Gotta be minute.
