Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "06 Rear LSD Oils", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The book says to use Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 SAE 90 ,above -18c (0 F) or below -18 C use SAE 80W or 80W-90. Make sure you have GL-5 gear oil. I used what the book said and it has been fine.
Mine shuddered from day one. It worked okay, though. The Toyo mechanic said it was the rear diff. He drained it & said the fluid looked like Royal Purple and asked if I had that put in. I told him it was whatever the factory or your dealership put in. He changed it to the regular Toyo oil & I never had the problem again. Would Toyota put in Royal Purple? He showed it to me & it definitely was purple. He said replacing it with Royal Purple was three times as much. The regular service was covered under warranty.??
I seem to remember looking at Royal Purple dealers in my area and it listed Gator Land Toyota in Gainesville as a Royal Purple dealer. So yea it would be possible a Toyota dealer used Royal Purple in your truck.

I know I wasn't there when the tech drained your gear oil, but I don't think Royal Purple was in your rear diff. RP has the LSD addative built in. I've changed mine rear diff twice now and both times I put RP in and no problems with shuddering.
I also helped Tundradrinalin change his and replaced the gear oil with Royal Purple. I haven't heard him complain about it other than to say it felt much smoother, but don't take my word for it.

what flavor did you add? Torco says they have 2 different applications but the one at pepboys does not specify? Would hate to add wrong one? I called Mobil about this and they told me it needed none because it was allready in it? I was thinking about adding a few drops to mine just for extra protection?

I would not add any if it is not making noise. Add 3 quarts and drive it for twenty mins if you dont have any issues. Take the filler plug out and fill it up, if it needs some modifier then add it.

I just did my 30K fluid change and only issue was i overserviced as usual! Crap oozing from vent and i took out a couple tabelspoons and cleaned vent and area surrounding it and all is well, no noise but just wanted that extra protection which you are probably rite. If it isn't broke do not fix it, same thing Mobil Oil Tech told me!
The bottles of mobil I used stated that they didn't need the modifier however after driving a few miles with it my rear end started making a scuffing sound. I drained enough out to get the friction modifier in and she quieted up immediately. I ran mobil when I had my silverado with the g80 locker and it worked fine in there without anything but not in my tundra. When I change this out the bottle of friction modifier will be the very first thing to go back in before I add the oil.

i know the Oil Tech's will have issues but i have gotten over it allready
Guess i need to read their MSDS's
