Default 06 Rear LSD Oils

Hey
I just changed the rear LSD gear oil on my Tundra TRD at 30K miles.

I'm telling you, if you haven't done this yet and you have some miles on your truck, DO IT. The oil comes out nasty and there is all kind of metal on the magnetic drain plug. I'm convinced the first oil change on the differentials and transfer case is a lot more important than subsequent ones! All the crap that comes from assembly and manufacture is floating around in there until the first change.

NOW, as far as the kind of grease to use in the rear end....Toy recommends "90W for LSDs". No such thing available at the auto parts stores. So dumb ole me gets 3 quarts of regular Valvoline 80-W-90 and a tube of TransX PosiTrac additive for LSDs. DO NOT do this. My rear diff is now shuddering on pulling out of a driveway at a sharp turn, for example. I'm gonna drain it out and use Lucas or a Synthetic that either say are good for LSDs with no additive required.

Can you guys confirm what I am saying here, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Joe

Yes, you need friction modified oil in that LSD. Drain out the non modified stuff and refill with proper Toyota LSD oil or equivalent and the problem will go away.

I just did my lsd couple days ago.(this is 2nd time). 1st time I used Valvoline w80-90 synthetic blend with friction modifier (no problem). This time I used Lucas oil w80-90 for LSD without friction modifier, so far no problem or whinning noise. seem I like it better than valvoline. I have nothing against valvoline. I used valvoline motor oil.

I'd have to agree with you that that first change is important. Mine came out smelling like it was burnt and tons of stuff on the magnet.

Later I helped Tundradrenalin change his newer model and his magnet was covered.

We both replaced the rear LSD diff oil with Royal Purple 75W-90 and we have had no problems at all. Did not need to add anything. See the DIY Sticky on the rear diff.

I've already done my transfer case, but not the front diff. Tundradrenalin and I plan to take picture of his transfer case and both front diffs for a DIY howto. Still planning to use RP 75W-90 in all.

How much per quart for the Royal Purple 75w-90 gear oil? I can't find it locally and will probably need to order it on the internet?

I went with Mobil 1 75W90 and i have had no issues and ya do not need to add anything cause it allready has the LSD addative in it and it can be found here for 8.99 Qt and no unusual sounds Drain plug did have a machine threaded curly Q on magnet but other than that no issue with group of junk floating since the magnet did a good job of holding this metal to drain plug! i will do one more at 60K and then extend interval since warranty will be over but every 50K should be a more realistic change interval to me using synthetic gear oil! probably could go 100K with no issues easy but 100K on anything seems too much to me!!

my buddy works at a toyota dealer and says that they use regular 80w90 in the rear with a GM LSD Additive. weird. i have also heard that putting synthetic in certain years will cause the axle seal to leak. i'll stick with the regular 80w90... with some additive, for now.

I have an 06 DC and just looked last weekend after reading on here to see if the LSD rear was in mine. Well it is, and I have almost 50k on my truck. I guess I need to get mine changed. I have not been towing, all highway so hope it will be ok. I am happy that I found this place, I would have never thought about looking and I don't think the other rear end requires it to be changed at 30k.

Dealers have been none to use wrong fluids dating back to early 2000-2003 trannys and they even got Toyota to pay for their screw ups for a while but Toyota drew the line in the servicebay and told dealers and consumers that no more free trannys due to both not using specd fluids, they still do this with engine oil due to bulk prices and you not being able to see. what they use works but might not be your choice. Yes dealers have poor maintenance practises and calling them out is only way to fix it! When you pay for free service for life i hope you know what you payed for, probably will not ruin motor but having a choice is what it's all about unless you like someone else getting paid for messing your vehicle up!
