Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Volant Air-intake", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I am considering the purchase of the Volant air-intake. Two years ago I did a air-box mod that I was quite pleased with until I installed my JBA Headers. The air-box mod I did was cut a opening in the front of the box and remove the fender pipe. Then when I installed the headers my Tundra became sluggish. I then returned my air-box to stock and got the gains back. I assume the modified air-box was sucking in the hotter air caused by my new headers, which caused the decrease in performance, what do ya'll think? The Volant intake looks like a happy medium between an open air box and stock. The Volant system is closed but it has a smooth pipe from the box to the engine and it does not have a winding tube from the box to the fender, it just plugs right into the fender hole. I am not expecting big gains, but would like to see a 5-10hp boost and a more of a grumble from my engine. When I had the open air box and headers, man my truck rumbled good, too bad the performance sucked. I would like to know if anyone has the Volant intake on there V8 Tundra or what ya'll might think of the setup, thanks.
I currently have a drop in K&N filter and have had it in for 3 years, now you got me worried. I wonder if I should flush my engine. Would this get rid of all the dirt that the K&N let through? Think of all the air-intake users out there. Are they all slowly killing their engines or is dirt getting in just a normal part of engine functioning. I know dirt is going to get in no matter what but do after market filters let so much dirt in that it decreases engine performance or life. What if I change my oil more frequently, would this help combat the dirt build-up?
This is an age-old debate, but I wouldn't be too worried about damage from K&N or conical filters. Everyone I know uses them, and always has, including LOADS of race cars. The race engines are prepared to very exacting tolerances, and would fail with any significant amount of dirt in the crankcase or elsewhere.
My '89 325i has 150,000 miles on it and the motor runs smooth and perfectly.

Funny, I look at it the other way around... I run K&N filters in my race car because I don't expect the engines to last as long (unfortunately I am on my third engine from last years racing). I run paper filters in my street cars because I do want them to last.
I appreciate the input guys. I emailed YZ250YAM. I have not heard back yet but if I do I will let ya'll know what he says. Thanks for the referal Simias. Later
That volant kit is nothing but an airbox, with filter inside it, and fender pipe to suck in cool air....identical to the OEM setup. The OEM is already a cool air intake setup, to make it more effiecient, device a way to get more cool air to enter it.
