Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "mobil1 grease ok for all zerks in drivetrain?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I imagine it would be fine, but what's wrong with normal grease?
I use mobil 1 in my engine, but the driveshaft? I'm not knocking you or anything, just seems a little excessive considering most people never grease their drivetrain and there really aren't any issues.
Plus, three sticks of grease from Advanced Auto is only like 3 bucks.....or free since I have a friend there

Probably not OK. Look in the rear pages of your owners manual where it talks about what oils, spark plugs and so forth to use.
For the various zerk fittings, generally Toyota specifies either a plain "Lithium base chassis grease" or "molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease"
Mobil 1 cannot be used in any fitting that requires "molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease".
There isn't really a way to remove it and replace it with molybdenum disulfide lithium base chassis grease. *shrug*
I guess I'll see if I can find some molybdenum disulfide lithium grease then which i believe can be used on all zerks from some further research i've done.
Toyota Corporate told me that it was ok to use Moly Lith in all fittings but not to use straight Lith in all fitting because it would not protect the zerks that called for Moly Lith, keeps from using 2 guns and 2 greases.
yeah, my question is let's assume that whomever owned my truck before used a lithium only based grease. There is no easy way to get that out. Do I just use moly gong foward and call it good?
Toyota said using Lith on a joint that called for moly lith would leave it unprotected per their specs?but that Moly Lith would not hurt joints specd for lith? i would just go with straight Moly Lith on everything and just let it work its way out and quit loosing sleep about it! i do it on both of my 4x4's and my older truck has a few more fitting plus i use it more in the woods. to my knowledge it has never had a failure of any joint and i got truck when it had 140K on it and it has 237K on it now and i keep them lubed at every oil change! same as my 06! Grainger Industrial Supply: Grease,Automotive 4ZF44 this is what i use!
Bottom line is this > if you don't grease it, it won't get greased, because I haven't come across a dealer yet who greases the zerks. This is a common complaint, especially on 4Runner's for driveshaft noise.
