Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "2006 Tundra Oil Leak", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok, I started this thread, and have some more information that may be useful. So, my 2006 Tundra, DC, Limited 4 WD, with the 4.7 L V8, 18000 miles, was experiencing an ever so slight oil leak. Pictures posted on this page from another viewer show the location of the leak. I first noticed as a tell-tale spot on the concrete here and there, and upon examination found oily debris accumulated at various places near where the bell housing and tranny connect. I took to Toyota last week, and they stated:
Its coming from the rubber boots around the front suspension; the factory sometimes overfills those, and as you drive, the lubricant thins, and seeps out. We tightened up the clamps.
Well, that was last week. Over the weekend I got under the car, looked close, and oil was again beginning to accumulate around the bell housing-tranny junction. I must emphasize, this was a very slow leak. NO OIL was coming from anywhere around the rubber boots. Immediately called Toyota. Car went back in this morning. Just go the call: Leaking rear main.
This vehicle has never towed anything, yet, has not been on any significant off road trip, and the oil has now been changed 6 times over the course of 18000 miles, always with new filter and 5-30W. Toyota has no explanation, but Truck will be fixed this afternoon. Toyota says they have not seen very often. At least it was under warranty, so they are taking care of it. Apparently, the tranny and front differential need to be loosened and slid back, and the rear main can be accessed and replaced. I am thinking of purchasing that extended warranty!
Service likes to play the comeback routine on fixin things and 3rd time is the charm from what i understand? Lucky they are doing something on the second comeback. They have protocol on comebacks and they use it , hope they get you hooked up!
I find their first diagnosis of a "leaking boot" quite stunning, especially as the boots were obviously not leaking. Oil leaking in the area you have experienced is always a rear main seal
Checked out the links in this thread and seems like this only happens to 04's and up only. I have an '02, anyone one know this was an issue in earlier models.
I had the same problem with oil leaking between engine and transmission. The tech at Toyota said it was actually a o-ring that was in the rear engine housing. They also changed the rear main seal just to be safe but tech said it was definatetly coming from o-ring not rear main seal. This is the parts they change:
ok i cleaned off the area really well, then checked back today 24hrs later.... not good. Here's my findings...
I checked the oil cap, the underside was covered in off-white sludge. Definitely some water entering in there. sht
I checked the dipstick, looks fine, in the right spots, nice color oil too.
I checked the spot under the truck, that I cleaned the day before, it's in the pics above. There was a small drip under the driver's side bolt in that picture. I touched the rag to the drip........... sht. The oil on the rag was the same color as the dipstick oil. I guess it's a nice fresh oil leak.
I'll be going to the Toy dealer this weekend. I'm sure I'll be pleading my case too. Not looking forward to this experience.

I find it hard to believe that those are leaks from a front drive boot. As far as I know, those things should be sealed tight and would only leak if they get torn or the clamps come loose. I believe that those boots seal out dust and dirt, and are there to keep the lubricant in, so there shouldn't be any place for them to leak, even if they are overfilled. If they are truly leaking then the dealer should fix them under warranty if they aren't torn by off road use.
Now I'm worried and itching to grab a flashlight and crawl under my truck in my driveway in the dark.
Most of the time it is the secondary oil pan. I have personnaly done 5-6 of these over the last year or so. It is not a commmon thing, but that is the first place to look when a customer complains about an oil leak/seep.
The trans has to come out anyways, so the rear main seal is right there to check too.
It is a 5/60 warranty issue.

Great excuse to install a higher stall speed torque converter while everything is apart.
...or just get a free oil pan and trans oil drain and refill by the warranty?
Feels like I wasted 6 and a half quarts of royal purple.

I like the converter Idea, I think LEXTREME HAS THEM.
The trans does not have to be drained if done properly. I have plugs for the cooler lines and a plug for the driveshaft if it is a 2wd and a plug for the dip stick tube. You do not loose very much trans fluid if done neatly and properly. I hate working in a messy area. They can also save most of the oil in the pan. I know I would if asked.

Ok, the truck is at the dealership now. Should get a phone call in the morning with some news. I explained I have an oil leak and to check around the rear main seal area.
No one in the service dept was there, so I had to do the drop-off deal for early-bird service.
