Default 4 Wheel Drive woes

I'm curious if anyone else has seen their 4WD system start to display "symptoms" of trouble? Mine has started to, lately

I've been using the 4WD system in the recent snows and have had 2 disturbing events happen. The first one was when I engaged the 4WD system and began to drive. I had waited until the 4WD light was shining solidly (indicating engagement) and began to drive. All of the sudden the transfer case made this awful sound of gears slipping and then re-engaged with a nasty clunk.

Everything worked fine after that. The next time I used 4WD, I was driving around, and stopped at home. I had parked my truck in the garage (it's a straight shot in, so no turning). When I got in to leave a short time later, I put the truck in reverse and eased on the gas to leave the garage. The truck didn't move and instead acted like the parking brake was on. It wasn't.

A little more gas and the Tundra suddenly lurched backwards with a REALLY loud clunk. The 4WD worked ok after that, but ewwww, nasty sounds have gotta mean something isn't right.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

When I first got my 2000, I must have had less than 10,000 on it. The 4x4 wouldn't engage, that stupid light would keep blinking, the dealer put a new transfer case in and it's been fine ever since. Does anyone else here hate crappy push button four whell drives, give me a lever to pull like in the Tacoma and I'd be much happier.

I too would much rather have a manual 4X4 system even though I have had no problems with mine. Then again, I would still prefer to have a manual transmission. Old habits die hard.

I know, I know. As I’ve been so politely informed on this forum before, I’m reluctant to accept change. Deal with it!
