Default Changing the ATF

I accidentally drained the ATF on my 2006 V6 Tundra. Can I replace that myself or will a visit to the dealer be required?

You can change it yourself...or more precisely, fill it your self. You'll need a hand pump and some ATF. There should be some posts in the engine and drivetrain section about the proper procedure and the proper fluid for the '06 models.

Thanks, I will go to that section to find the proper procedure.

You are a life saver. I wasn't looking forward to going to the dealer about 10 miles away with the ATF reservoir empty.

Toyota "WS" ATF can be found at Dealership and myself would use nothing else. If you used a clean container you could just add the fluid you drained?
Should have been only around 4 Qts? Just pour it into a Clean Qt jug with a hand pump attached and pump it back in?

Not that big of a deal unless you make it one, it is kinda like the oil change issues with the newer Tundras? That canister thing dates back to early 60's era and i think the design is poor at best! Question the quality of the Media which probably should not be an issue but just curious how much better this media is vs a couple of quality spin on filters? The Fluids in the Tranny are synthetic and should be inspected every 30K which i feel is not happening unless you do it yourself. Dealers are telling all it does not ever need checking or changing

I would never return ATF fluid back to the tranny even if it went into a clean container. Just add some new fluid so it will mix with the old.

I would only do it the way i mentioned if Toyota Parts was closed as in after hours or weekends and I only had one ride and it was missing 4 qts of ATF. I agree adding used fluid is not good but when you do not have a fresh supply of WS ATF setting next to your truck what ya going to do? If container you drained into was not a clean pan i would not use it! I would not use the 4 Qt method either to drain fluid from Tranny kinda like doing engine oil change and only draining half the oil , i would do the Toyota Machine flush with WS ASAP after this if they let me watch! Price of new Tranny is too much to skimp on fluid changes and my ATF fluid cycle will be done at 50 to 60K miles with all new WS ATF.

NEVER drive a vehicle that is LOW on tranny fluid. You will fry the unit (assuming it moves at all). In this case, I suspect that even if you did try to drive the truck, it wouldn't have moved.

I have 38k on my truck and it has never been changed, what kind of fluid is best? Might try changing before my honeymoon trip to TN.

Thanks

Owners Manual mentions to use only Toyota ATF 'WS" it is synthetic and probably made for Toyota by Mobil Oil but they have no replacemnet for WS on the market as far as i know. i would not go 120K before changing it even if i did not tow! I also have been told by Corporate it never needs changing and you go to their service site and it says 120K and 60 K if ya tow ? why there is conflicting info is by me? I will do mine around 50 to 60K miles just to be safe!!
