Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Limited slip differential oil", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Many post on here about that and no one seems to agree. I have the 06 DC with the LSD and the book says 90w or 80w-90 but nothing about synthetic for the LSD. It does say Hypoid gear oil API GL-5 and list SAE 90 for above -18 and sae 80w or 80w-90 for below-18 for the LS rear differential. For the standard differential it say Synthetic oil SAE 75w-140 but does not say anything about Sythetic for the LSD. Thats the book on my 2006 Tundra DC. If you have your owners manual look at it and go with what it says, make sure of the API Gl-5 if thats what the book on the 04 calls for. I know a lot of people use Mobile 1 and others Royal Purple. Some have to add additional additive and others don't. I didn't and used the 80w-90 for my LSD and have had no problems in the 2k miles since I changed it.

I have used Castrol Syntec 75w90 in my LSDs ( all Toyotas ) for the past 15 years with no issues. But regardless of what oil you use, remember to add a bottle of LSD additive to reduce clutch chatter. I use the AC Delco brand additive as it is easily available where I am, but there are others out there from Redline or Royal Purple for example. Some gear oils have the additive already added so you may also check for this.
Let me correct myself the 80w-90 was sythetic that I used. As I said before just make sure it is GL-5 rated and it will have the additive you need for the LSD already in it.

You might want to consider Amsoil. I did the rear diff, front diff and xfer case last fall and used the Amsoil product. Thier web site is very infomative, right down to the quantites that you'll need in each assy. I believe if you search here you can find additional info. I added some lsd rear diff additive and haven't had any problems. Used 4x4 a ton this winter, the drive train seemed quieter in with the Amsoil.

I would not use the synthetic in LSD. I put synthetic in mine because I thought it would be better and it caused some slippage. Changed it back to the regular oil for LSD and slippage disappeared after the second change (I flushed it and drove a couple miles). I am using LUCAS oil for LSD now with no problems.

I have an original '80 4X4 that I put an Auburn LSD unit in about 15 years ago. My '01 has a TRD (400lb Eaton) unit that I installed last year. Gear oil for LSD units is nothing new, just maybe your dealership.
I have been chasing a power steering growl for a few weeks now and dealer changed the rear gear lube to 80W90 Dino and added friction modifiers and all the growling has gone away!! I had just done my 30K mile diff service with 75W90 Mobil 1 Synthetic and all they had to do was drain out enough to add the friction modifiers but instead they just changed it to Spec! 80W90 is impossible to find around here and i called Mobil Oil before i changed it to Mobil 1 Syn,and they told me no problem it has enough addatives to not cause any growling. Well it was growling so hard it sounded like the power steering was goin out! I would still use Mobil 1 Synthetic in the rear diff but on an LSD rear diff i would put 2 to 6% modifier with the Mobil 1!! I like to learn the hard way i guess!! was not a small chatter it was a continual growl like pump burnt up sound was coming from rt front side of truck but they finally got me going and soo much quieter!! Guess i will call Mobil Oil tomorrow and see what they will say?
Torco sells an addative just for Toyotas and i think it's the "F" version of their modifiers! I got an email from them and they said it would be no issue using it at all! so 60K service i will try Mobil 1 again with some Torco "F" modifier!!
