Default Thermostat Housing

I finally got around to changing my coolant today... Since the Haynes manual suggests removing the thermostat when flushing the system, I purchased a new thermostat and gasket and was going to put the new one in after the flush. That was the plan anyway...

I got to the part where I was supposed to remove the thermostat housing and none of the sockets I have seemed to be the right size. 12MM was the closest, but there was too much play and my 12 point socket would have rounded off the corners of the nut. Anyone else change their thermostat yet? If so, what size socket did you use? Maybe I just need a 6 point 12MM...

I ended up not messing with the thermostat this time around and just refilled.

Did you try 13mm?
Or how about 1/2" (which is 12.7mm)

Sometimes they do kinky stuff like that, for whatever reason...

My guess is if 12mm is too big, then you might try 11mm or 7/16"

I tried 11MM and 7/16 last night...both too small. 1/2" was way too big. 12MM was the best fit, but still had too much play. I'm going to try a 12MM 6 point socket if I can find one at Sears today.

Sears has an 11 piece, 3/8th drive, 6 point metric socket set on sale for $9.95 while they last. I bought a set a few days ago because the bolt and nut sizes on this Tundra seem to run just a bit small, providing a loose fit for a 12 point Craftsman anything. A 6 point socket or box end wrench fits just fine.

The torque spec for the thermostat housing attaching nuts is 14 foot-pounds.
