Regearing an '01 - Do the differentials use RTV or a gasket?
I'm having a mechanic buddy help me swap out my 3.91's to 4.56's soon and I'm lining up my parts list. Do the 2001 front and rear diffs take a gasket or RTV? I've never cracked mine open so I don't know, but I called a local Toyota parts counter to see if they had them and the guy said he couldn't find any in the system and he's pretty sure it uses RTV. This, of course, was the same darwin candidate that didn't know what a transfer case was when I went in to pick up replacement drain/fill plug gaskets.

Tthe front is RVT and the rear is a gasket...save some $$ and just use RVT on the rear though...when I did my 05, I went with the gasket and it fit very poorly and I ripped it trying to fit it over the studs. My dealer just uses RVT as well.
Re: Regearing an '01 - Do the differentials use RTV or a gasket?
Use the gasket on the rear. To properly install the paper gasket you must first soak it in water then fit it over the studs otherwise you will rip it. Another tip is to apply a thin coating of Aviation Form-a-Gasket ( this is the brush on stuff, it is not any form of silicone) to the housing gasket surface first, then apply the soaked paper gasket. Next apply a thin coating of the Aviation Form-A-Gasket on the carrier gasket surface. This will make a leak free barrier and allow the paper gasket to be easily removed in one piece ( no scraping ) if you ever remove the carrier again ( much easier and less work than RTV scraping ).

I learned that one from a Toyota service manual for my '80 Toy 4x.
Re: Regearing an '01 - Do the differentials use RTV or a gasket?
when I installed my locker in the rear I used RTV around the 3rd member. It seems to be holding up just fine, no leaks or anything. I guess if i have to open it back up it will take some time removing all the RTV. I probly should have used a gasket, but I was too excited about having a locker, hahaha. Either or should work.
