Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Has anyone installed TRD LSD on a 01' tundra??", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I was thinking about putting a LSD in the rear of my 01' tundra. Its a 4x4 ltd with the v8. How difficult was this project? Is it a do it yourselfer or do I need to take my truck into the stealership? Thanks Matt
It shouldn't be too hard to do as long as you have the right tools. Go to www.toy4x4.net and check out the Lock Right Locker install on the Tundra. This was my tundra that Mike Ross and I did. We completed it in about 3 hours. I though it was going to be difficult. However, after doing it, I could do it again. If you plan on tackling the job, make sure you keep everything organized and left/right side oriented, specifically the shims.
I realize I am coming into this thread somewhat late, but a buddy of mine bought and installed the TRD LSD and it is a complete unit! You "simply" replace the rear diff. with the TRD LSD one. I can't quite remember if there is a "core" charge involved, but I think there is.

Re: Has anyone installed TRD LSD on a 01' tundra??
When my gears were done I bought the lsd from a dealer that was advertising them on the forum for $299.00 (TRD). It involves pulling the whole carrier with the ring gear, replacing the carrier and reinstalling. If you don't change gear ratios you wont have to touch the pinion. Be sure and measure the backlash on the gears before removal and reinstall EXACTLY the same. I think you could do it yourself with a dial indicator and a good bearing puller. If you are changing ratios I would leave it for a pro. Messing with used gears can be a disaster if they don't go back together just exactly the way they wore in to one another. Last time I did any myself I used white lithium grease to check the smear pattern. Don't know if that procedure has been replaced with a better method or not.
I've got a great idea that will save you alot of hassle! Just fly out here and buy my wrecked '00, drive it home, it'll be a little drafty and real ugly, then swap out the whole front and rear ends with the suspension tires and wheels. That would keep you busy for a day or two. Swap the engine too and your truck will scream!

I put the Kazuma TRD LSD in my 2002 and it is the best money I have spent. performanceproducts4trucks.com has the LSD for $275.00. I took it to the dealers in the area and they were unable (did not want to) intall it since the carrier and gears are reused. I took it to a differential shop and they installed for $350.00 out the door. THe Kazuma's clutch packs are tensioned to 400 foot pounds so you get that much more traction.
There is the option of swapping the entire third member (core charge included) and you get the regular TRD LSD, the packs are tensioned to 200 foot pounds. Either way you better know what you are doing, not really for the shadetree mechanic.
