Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Anyone ever set up gears? difficulty level", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just bought this eBay Motors: Toyota Tundra Tacoma T100 TRD LSD Differential 4:10Posi (item 180255536267 end time Jun-25-08 19:00:00 PDT) for the rear but now i have to do the front diff. I was told tacoma gears will fit or possibly an entire tacoma 3rd since they had the option of 4.10s from the factory. If memory serves correct i can swap over all the automatic 4wd stuff. They seem to be easily obtained too. If i would get used gears are they hard to set up. Im thinking worst cast scenario if i cant find the entire 3rd with low miles. I can do most things on my own but i dont want to set it up wrong. My dad has been a toyota service tech for 24 years but he says in all those years he can count the diff failures he has seen on one hand. Most of the time toyota will send out an entire remaned unit and he can install it. No messing around with setting up gears so he dont have a lot of experience with this either. What cost am i lookin at for someone to set this up and can you recommend anyone within driving distance of lancaster pa.
I have installed gears before on a few rigs and I can tell you it is not easy, though not as rocket science as some shops want you to believe. I would not recommend used gears (for the exception of someone who has done it several times and knows how to read the wear marks). I too have heard the rumors of the Tacoma having the same diffs but please don't quote me. I don't have both of our trucks in front of me to tell you if the mounts were the same or not. Now a complete front diff used would be a good buy and same a lot of time and money.
Expect a shop to charge about $400-500 for gears, install kit, and set up. There are a lot of tools required to make this work properly.
Glad to hear how few failures Toyota has seen. Nice find BTW!

I had my TRD rear lsd installed by a guy in Townsend Delaware. He did it on a Saturday. took about 1 1/2 hours. He is a race shop. IIRC, it cost me $225.
PM me and I can give you his info.
Or go to one of the race shop guys. they set up rears all the time.
