Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Time for Timing Belt Change: What else????", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok folks, it is time to change the timing belt in my 2002 toyota tundra v8 engine. there seems to be two thoughts on this:
1) change belt and water pump.
2) do complete front end (belt, water pump, idler/tensioners, seals, etc).
i agree with #1. Not so sure about #2. But you guys have more experience than me. What are your thoughts?????
I have a 00 and just did this two months ago, I would go with #1 add a new thermostat, and anti-freeze change. I would also clean the throttle body and mase airflow sensor, I put in new plugs ( my are copper Denso's ) Bought all my parts from Anythingtoyota.com ask for Mark They advertise here on the forum and their prices were great, shipping fast. I do not know when you changed your serpentine belt last but that is a local part pick up, that you can get as you are doing this job (Gattorback works well for me.)
Hope this helps
Kevin
i've already cleaned the throttle body and the MAF. new plugs going in about 1K miles from now. i replaced the s.belt around 60K miles ago, so i might replace, but right now, visually it still looks brand new and does not squeak.

Then I would leave it alone do the basics. I would order timing belt and water pump thermostat and some Toyota anti-freeze. This will get you going the only thing that is a maybe is the tensoiner which is tested when you take it out. Most people on the site have had no problems with it, I would wait till it is out and tested before I made the move to change if it really needs it.
I saved so much on my buy from AnythingToyota.com that I could by this item local and still be ahead.
You can get a Harmonic Ballancer puller, and good chain wrench(Vise grip style) at Sears, or Harbor Freight. Take your time and enjoy, it is not a bad job just time consuming.
Kevin
These are the two I purchased, I did not pull the radiator so my harmonic ba puller allthread shaft was to long so I had to cut like 2 inches off of it, worked perfect, it is only 10 bucks @ harborfreight or Auto Zone, the strap wrench I bought at Harbor freight also I just could not find it on there web site.
