Default Toyota Extended Warranty does not cover...

I was shocked yesterday to find out that my 50k mi '00 Tundra had yet another O2 sensor fail. Being beyond the factory 36k, it was my first experience with warranty work on the no-deductable Toyota GOLD extended warranty I'd purchased for approx. $1000.

While the part and the labor were covered ($160), the diagnostic time was not. I was billed $70.00 for the techs time needed to diagnose the O2 failure - even though the sensor WAS covered.

I couldn't believe what the service advisor was telling me, so I went to his manager. The SM told me that he didn't think it made any sense, but in his experience NO extended warranty (even Toyota's Platinum) covers the diagnostic charges.

My whole point to purchasing the NO DEDUCTABLE extended warranty was to avoid any surprise charges if/when a covered part failed. Turns out, even if the part is covered, they can sock it to you for countless diagnostic hours. Talk about double-dipping.

I recently purchased a Rav4 (for my wife), and opted to buy a third-party extended warranty from Warranty Gold. After talking to the SM, I went home, dug out my policy, and called them. Unequivically, they cover EVERYTHING - labor, parts, and ANY diagnostics. I was boiling.

I'm going to call Fidelity Insurance (that's who Toyota uses) and get my pro-rated refund, then I'll buy the Warranty Gold warranty.

FWIW, my brother put me on to Warranty Gold. He has a '96 Chrysler Town & Country (poor guy), and bought the Warranty Gold policy. He's had over $6k in claims so far (transmission, A/C, and various other expensive items). They've paid for EVERYTHING no questions asked, no hassel.

If you're in a position of buying a warranty, let me caution you NOT to buy Toyota's version - unless you like surprises. If you choose to look at Warranty Gold, send me an email, and I'll get you their sales guy's information - and you can give them my name...

Moderators Note: The thread " Toyota Extended Warranty does not cover..." has been moved to the Engine and Drivetrain Forum where this topic is discussed often about 02 sensors. PM was sent to the thread starter of its relocation. --- Possum

Update:

I called Fidelity Warranty Service and was told:

- diagnostics are NOT covered
- even though I'm only 4 months out of my 3 year factory warranty and have used 14k miles of the 64k miles balance (of 100k miles) they will only refund 50% of my 1000.00 purchase price - less a $50 cancelation fee.

The guy was an arrogant as*hole. Highway robbery. AVOID TOYOTA'S EXTENDED WARRANTY!

Are you sure you are talking about a Toyota factory-backed plan? It was my understanding that the Toyota factory-backed plans were not available in SET (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, N. Carolina and S. Carolina).

You're right. I should be carefull not to directly implicate Toyota. I'm looking at the contract, and it's "Tender Loving Care Mechanical Failure Servcie Contract for New Cars" by Fidelity Warranty Services, Inc.

However, it was pushed by the Toyota Dealer as a "Toyota" plan. Officially, it isn't. You're right.
