Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Cant do synthetic trans fluid???", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Ok i just called up my local toyota dealer to ask what it would cost for a trans flush. She said $74. I also asked if they could use synthetic trans fluid and she stated word for word "you cant use syntetics because of the torq converter and seals and stuff." To me this sounded like a real load of crap. Is this true??? This is the second toyota dealer i have called and they wont do synthetic trans changes. Does anyone know any good placed in Austin, TX or nearby to have this done???
Moderators Note: The thread "Cant do synthetic trans fluid???" has been moved to the Engine and Drivetrain Forum for better exposure and replies. PM was sent to thread starter of its relocation. --- Possum

You can use synthetic ATF that is ATF D-II or DEXRON III compliant.

Complete instructions in the "Garage". Cheaper than paying someone.

Originally posted by tundrawes I would rather do it myself , the only problem is i have never done it before.
I hadnt done it before either. It was easy as pie to do. Personally i would save the $74. You can buy the Mobil 1 synthetic fluid for $74, right at it anyway. Thats all it will cost you.
I would be glad to help you do it, im in SA. Sorry thought you were in Austin.

OK, I just renewed my membership after a 1 month leave of absence. Plus I will need the "Garage" section in the future. So now that I am going to change my own Trans fluid what kind does everyone suggest?
Thanks,
Wes

What are y'all calling a "flushing" of the auto transmission? My 2002 manual for my 4WD V-8, and the Haynes manual, only calls for a little over 2 quarts to be put back in when changing the screen. Is this all the fluid that is in the Trans or is there a lot more in the torque converter that does not come out with the basic change? If a little over 2 quarts is all that is in a supposedly "tough Tundra" transmission, it ain't much and I can see how they could have heat problems even with the external cooler they come with. In addition, the Haynes manual shows no pan gasket and states you just use RTV silicone sealer for a gasket. If this were correct, it would be well worth $72 just to insure that the dealer would be responsible for any leaking pans.

If you just do a pan dump-and-fill, I think it works out to around 2 quarts, but yes, there's a lot more in the torque converter.
Many places have a machine that they hook up to your tranny cooler lines, which pumps the old fluid out while pumping new fluid in. This ends up being a lot more thorough change, getting most of the stuff out of the torque converter and other spots.
Not sure about the RTV vs Pan Gasket...
