Default Assistance with removing driver side half shaft.

I'll be tackling the seal fix for the driver side half shaft myself. For those of you that have removed the half shafts, what is the easiest way. I've replace half shafts before but, not on the tundra yet. I don't consider this to be a hard to do, I just want to get the suggestions to mke the process run smoother and faster.

Thanks,
Mike

It is really pretty easy. The only thing that may seem weird is the fact that you have to bang the hell out of the shaft to get it out. It just sits in there and kind of "pops" in place. You will want a very large screw driver with a blunt tip (not sharp). Put the screwdriver (I actually used a blunt carpet knife for this, but a screwdriver works fine too) on one of the ribs behind the cv joint where it goes into the diff. Bang the hell out of it til it "pops" out. That's really the only thing that will give you some trouble. You will want to buy new dust covers (the black metal caps over the hubs) cuz you will most likely destroy the one that is on there when you remove it. By some clips too (I can't remember the name...the ones that go through the bolt and nut to keep it from backing off). There is one on the bolt under the dust cover.

When are you planning this?? I've been very busy lately, but if you are doing it when I am available....I'd like to come by and give you a hand. After over a year....my boots are starting to leak again...no tearing atleast, but I amy be doing hte same thing as you soon.

Chris

I plan on doing this before next weekend. The part is suppose to come in on tuesday or wednesday. Sometime next week, I'm also suppose to have the sliders and rear bumper fitted from bentup.com. So, possibly thursday.

You must be talking about the cotter pin. Did you have to disconnect the upper or lower a-arm from the spindle? I'll try using a crow bar to pop the axle out.

Thanks for the info
Mike

Replaced the seal this afternoon and it took about 2 hours. Which includes about 30 mins of going to different auto stores to find a 35mm socket to remove the axle nut. Also tried changing the fluid but ended up busting the allen wrench(socket type).

why did you need to replace the oil seal? or are you talking about the cap on the outside of the hub, the one red is talking about banging out?

(...about to install manual hub kit, w/half-shafts)

There was diff fluid leaking between the half shaft and the diff. I had this happen over a month ago on the passenger side and was told it was the seal. The seal was replaced and no more leaking. I'm waiting for the rain to dry so, I can tell whether or not the driver side is still leaking or not.
