Default Intermittent drive train vibration

I have a 2002 Tundra V8 and have been experiencing an intermittent drive train vibration when I take off from a stop. I can feel the vibration in the floor board and in the steering column. It's as if something isn't reseting all the time when I come to a stop. The engine sounds like its lugging down. Other times it runs out real smooth.

It never does this when it's cold.

I was wondering if any of you Tundra owners have experienced this and would be willing to share what you did about it

Default Been there, done that.

Yup, and it's a classic problem. Go check the alignment and lubrication of your drive shafts.

The drive shaft is in two sections which are connected in the middle by a "double cardan joint" and a "center carrier bearing". The carrier bearing should be adjusted left-to-right such that the two sections of the drive shaft are in a straight line fore-and-aft. If it's not, just loosen the two bolts holding it to the frame, line up the shafts, and tighten the bolts. The service manual calls for 30 ft-lbs of torque.

The rear section has a spline that connects the shaft to the rear U-joint. This spline used to come with little or no lubrication. There is a zerk to the rear of the spline -- use a lithium-based chassis grease and give it 40+ pumps, enough so you see it try to spread the spline joint apart from internal pressure. Some have advocated removing and replacing the zerk to bleed off the excess pressure, but I didn't do that -- I wanted that internal pressure to force the grease into the splines. Give it a few hundred miles to lubricate the spline thoroughly.

Default Nope.

Nope, I'm not sure that's it, but it ought to be checked. A vibration on accelerating from a dead stop is a classic symptom of a mis-aligned drive train.

I get increased vibration through the floor boards at around 2300-2500 rpm. I only have about 350 miles on the truck. Does this sound like drive shaft alignment? I think this happens only when the truck is moving.

My 2002 vibrates when it kicks into overdrive between 40-50 mph. Hit the overdrive off button and the slight vibration goes away. 3,000 miles on mine.

Question

Vibration when shifting into overdrive kinda sounds like torque converter problems to me..........wouldn't think that would be possible at that low of mileage.................good luck.

Default i have shudder/vibration

I too have a take-off shudder/vibration. I noticed it when I first got the truck and I now have 3000 miles on it. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it does not. I almost want to say that my shudder/vibration is not drive shaft related because the engine sounds different like in the exhaust or something but I am no expert... I want to say I do see a lessened amount of power, I may hear and feel the power pulsating irradically if I accelerate just right, and the shudder may last from 0 up to 45mph or faster until I let off the gas and put gas back to it. Also, the more people I have in the truck... the more it seems to happen... Maybe it is a compression issue... again.. I'm no expert

I am really displeased that my truck does this and I have considered getting rid of it even though I have had it only for four or so months. I honestly don't have the time to live at the service department and don't enjoy the run-around you get when they can't replicate the issue. My passengers raise their eyebrows to me when it happens and it is not right.

I did take it into service a month+ ago and the service technician did say that it could be the engine but I did not initally listen to him considering the first thing he said was that "these four wheel drive trucks have had vibration issues" and my truck is two wheel drive...

Can't imagine what the problem is. I will be taking my truck in next week as I have been putting it off for awhile.... Seems there are more and more people experiencing this issue as I think I was the first to start talking about it last Dec. Maybe its a new "bug". If anyone has any further ideas about the problems I have described... please make a post.

Thanks

Smile intermittent vibration - dealer replacing torque converter

I took my tundra back to my dealer today. They called Toyota and they told them to replace the torque converter.

My vibes (more like a growl) hence my trucks nickname "Fido", kicks in at 48 and seems to get better around 55. Toyota said they had a fix, waited 1 1/2 year before they did anything. They told me they were going to install floor board insulation (which they did). Second part of the fix was different rear springs????????????? which they didnt do. Insulation seem to quiten the truck down a bit, but "Fido" still growls. Growl starts, as you describe, when the OD kicks in. I dont notice it as much . I have learned to drive thru the vibration point before I let it kick into OD.----Buzzard

Buzzard,
Sounds like we have an identical problem. I know there are a lot of people who have noticed this and I hope that everyone reports this to the dealer or even contacts Toyota directly so this can be fixed in new models. Maybe they will even come out with a solution to those of us who have to live with this. It seems trivial to complain about such things but when you buy a $30,000 vehicle there is no excuse for vibration of any sort from the drivetrain.

Smile Intermittent drive train vibration - fixed

My dealer changed out the torque converter yesterday and fixed the vibration problem, although it still roars a lot on a hard acceleration.
