Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "V8 Supercharger", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
OK, I got the low down for everyone. I spoke with a kid who works for TRD out in california building race motors for the company. He gave me the speel on the V8 supercharger. There were no tranny or rearend problems with the original model. The problem was,,,,, it only produced 60 HP. TRD knew people wouldnt purchase it for around $4000 if it produced that lil H.P. So they went back and the newer models are producing over 100 H.P. and there is no rearend problem, so put a stop to that rumor. Release date is this summer

T.R.D or better yet turd as i call it (lol) has had the supercharger in prodution since 2000 and mid year deserts test were done around 2000 for testing..I know there were reports of toyota dealers telling customers that the rear ends were mess up that was proberly just a delay tactic used by toyota...The s/c has been delayed too many times to count and quicktoy from what i know about this topic is toyota has had some problem's with it just the reason it has been delayed so many times to count..for me it's better toyota take's the time to get it right before there sell it aftermarket...will we see toyota add a trd s/c in the factory form proberly not(lets hope tundra has a ford svt lighting killer)but than again thev6 s/c in the tacoma is aftermartket and not in factory form.....
I have been toying around the idea of getting a s/c. Excuse my ignorance, but how bad does it effect gas milage? Is it like a turbo where it doesn't use up any more gas as long as you are running at low RPM's? I would hate to spend that much for a mod and have it drink a crap load of premium gas. Another huge gas price increase would break me.
May eat a gallon to 3 gallons over stock consumption, but you'll have to run 93 octane. And as far as rumors of early problems with the S/C, they were all bogus--it just didnt have enough H.P.

Is the V8 supercharger available yet? The TRD site lists it as to be available (this month). My local dealer has not seen it yet (anytime I am sure). We tend to get things in the Frozen Tundra State after the hotspots do! If someone has it (V8 SC) in, can it be retroed in like previous TRD s/c products or is it something exclusive to 2002 and newer products. Thanks.
ha....I thought for a second that the supercharger ate the gas.....I had to reread what quicktoy wrote -- at first I thought it said "ate one gallon per every 3 gallons"

I would not be in a hurry to be one of the first people to get it. It has been delayed so many times that it must have some problems. The stock rear end can't handle the torque is one known problem. I don't see how the stock trans will hold up with that much torque eigther. There is info in the FAQ of the site.

I don't know who source is better but I talked to a toyota engineer last summer at the TTORA club event toyota and Ivan were all out there to support us..They knew all about this board, They refered to it as a b!tch fest..lol.. When I asked an engineer about the rear end problem with the toyota, he said the problem they were having was the carrier bearing holder or supports were breaking, and that's why the S/C comes with a limited slip and and few extra parts for the rear..At least that's what he said.. He sounded pretty confident but who knows..
a gallon to three gallons? wow. from what i understood my dads doesnt really eat any more gas than it did before...im talking about his v6 supercharger in his forerunner. if you dont get on it its supposed to be about the same as stock...

well next time someone sayes something like that i would say something like this you build the tundra right then people will not complain about the brakes topic or anything else we all know...we the customers know more than toyota does about reliably issues and one thing's for sure the trd s/c is no exception. my dealer knows about this site hell they review it ....
Magnacharger developed it, builds it and will market it through Toyota. It's based on a small Eaton unit. It's no big secret; just e-mail Magnacharger and ask them about it. Any supercharged vehicle wiil use more gas if you stay on the pedal, and likely use LESS if you don't. If you want to play with Lightnings, pony up the pennies. If not, like me, be happy with what you've got!
