Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tickin' Tundra", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The rubber mount you see in the photo is just a shock isolator for the power steering resevoir. The bracket is metal on metal inner fender which bolts up to the rest of the body metal on metal...
I forgot to mention in my post that the photos belong to Toy Tundra. I can't take credit for those.
My '03 Tundra has had the noise from the beginning. I changed to Castrol Syntech at 9K and at 11K there is no difference in the noise. It is definately worse in the am, and In MN, mornings here are really beginning to get cool again. Reminds me of the old 6.2 diesle that was in the work truck
I have a 2002 4.7L Tundra that rattles like a freakin' freight train when cold. Switched to Mobile1 w/ Mobile1 filter & no change. I've just resorted to a longer warm up time & reallly gentle first few miles. Kind of sucks to pay big $$ for Toyota quality & end up w/ a rattle trap. Besides for the noise, I LOVE my Tundra.
I have a 03 stepside that had a very slight tick when cold.Didn't hear it when the engine warmed up.Took it to my dealer and they listened to it two different times.Called me and told me I had piston slap. They tore my engine apart imediately and told me #7 piston was scored and the cam bearings were burnt.Toyota authorized a new motor gave me a loaner car for the week and a half it took to install.Kudos to Toyota, they stepped up to the plate and did all this without me asking for anything but a determination on what the noise was.
Ok I can understand how the piston/cylinder gets scored, but how does a cam bearing get burnt? The cams are in the heads, and completely disconnected from the piston/rod other than the timing belt/chain between the crank and cams.

Their theory was lack of oil.Had me show at least 5 oil change receipts to prove I have been changing the oil before the ok on the new motor. That brings up a new point,be sure to save all oil change receipts for just such an emergency. Also they told me they upgraded my oil pump. Not being a mechanic that is about all I know about it.
That is a good sign that they repaired your engine. Mine raps so hard that I know I won't be keeping at the end of the lease. Sounds worse than my sisters diesel.
If they fix my severe engine rap I will keep it. Otherwise.. I'll be heading to another manufacturer, but not sure who.. My 1998 GMC Sierra had 3 engines in it with a similar engine rap. NICE !! Look whats happening to GM for not taking care of their customers.
Toyota be careful, you better step up to the plate or you will lose many customers.
Anyone have Diff problems. I have the TRD and it sounds like gears are not locking in with any wheel spin.
Have you guys seen the noise increase over time? I bought the truck used and never really heard it then, but it's so loud now I can't even drown it out with the radio. Being as my gas mileage has been decreasing somewhat I'm concerned about this... It goes into Toyota in a week and a half for the ball joint recall and I am thinking of having them check this out too, but would like to know what other people experience so I'm somewhat educated first.

About three weeks ago I asked a local dealer to check The Noise and they called back the next day and offered me a new engine. The new engine is in, and it's quiet. As a previous poster mentioned as well, they also said something about a new coating on the cylinders.
I was also really impressed with how the dealer stepped up and took this on. OTOH I also know they're not that busy right now and in fact when I went back a couple of days ago to have the oil changed I notice only one car in for repairs in a 10-bay garage. Consider me a happy skeptic, I guess.

Hi every one. I am new member from Easton Mass, I also have tic-kin 03 Tundra Ex Cab 4.7 wen its cold, with 24000 miles on it,The Dealer toll me it was Injector noise?I think it was a lie,I bought Toyota Tundra because it was raided best by Consumer report's am ready to trade it in.
I've asked the dealership to check on my noisy motor next Monday when it's in the shop, the tech on the phone said "we'll listen to it" but I could already hear the "...and tell you it's normal" response coming back.
I think I'm going to actually record the audio though; I have some studio mic's and a mixer, I should be able to dump the audio into a laptop. I want to get startup, and engine bay as well as in-cab recordings of this, and bring it on my iPod so when they say "a little knocking is normal" I can play it back and explain that people down the street should not be turning their heads to see what the noise is when I drive away. I can understand "some" noise, but it has been getting worse, which to me indicates that metal is wearing down and things are loosening up. They better have a damn good reason for "nothing's wrong, congrats on buying a 3-minute Diesel" if that is their response.
What I really want to do is take it to an independent shop I trust and get a second opinion in that case, but who knows what that will cost me since I'd want the whole works - borescope in the cylinders, etc.

Upgrade the oil pump why would they do that unless theres a problem with the old pump, if they knew you were posting on this site they would never admit to upgrading the oil pump. I bet the newer motors have highter volume oil pumps and for a reason.
Well, I spoke with the service advisor this morning when dropping off my truck. I explained how the motor sounds like someone banging with a hammer for the first few minutes of my morning drive, gets worse under load, etc.
He said the "normal" Tundra tick lasted 10 seconds or so, and that if mine was lasting this long something wasn't right. Sooo, it's going on the rack for a few hours for the Ball Joint recall work. If he can hear the noise after that he'll diagnose at that time, otherwise he wants to keep it overnight so he can listen in the morning after it cools off all the way. So now I have a rental car, and am wondering if he'll stick with the "it's normal" line or something more like a certain part of the motor is wearing out or not getting lubed enough. Mine sure as hell knocks for more than 10 seconds, and it's not a tick - I can hear it over the radio with the windows closed, and people a block away turn to see what is making the racket. We shall see...

I had Piston slap on my 99 Expedition. It slapped at start up in the morning but the rest of the day's starts were fine. took it to Honolulu Ford and left it overnight. Wesley the service advisor fired it up and heard the slap. Engine was replaced by Ford at no charge (was still under warranty). No more slap.
