Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "2003 SC Where is the Power ?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Took a Test drive today in a new 2003 Tundra V8 SuperCharged 4X4, I have been thinking of having a SuperCharger installed on my 2000 Tundra. The parts manager at a local Toyota dealership just brought out a new vehicle for demo drives and invited me to stop by for a test drive. The vehicle looks nice with the 17 inch wheels, and the limited trim, the vehicle was painted in a dark grey metallic, 4X4 access cab. I started at the dealership, the vehicle engine was cold , I drove gently down the street to let it warm up before attempting any spirited acceleration. As I approached the freeway from the on ramp I floored the accelerator, which forced a down shift to first gear, there was instantly a noticeable whine from the engine, I held it untill third gear was finally engaged. I took the next off ramp to a less travelled side street and tried a few 0-45 runs. Here is what I observed, I was expecting it to thrust through the gears, with the advertised increase in horse power and torque. The vehicle acceleration was not impressive at all. 0-70 seems on par with my stock non SuperCharged Tundra, 0-45 seems slower, overall I would place it slower than my 2000.

Toyota engineered it so that you would not kill your drivetrain with hardshifts. when the truck just had it bolted on it probably mashed down the road like a madman, but the engine has adapted to the charger. Im interested to find out myself soon, hope to have some numbers as well.
Interested in a test drive,? Contact: STEVENS CREEK TOYOTA in Santa Clara Ca. 408-984-1234 ask for parts dept, ask to speak to Grant or stop by and see him.
Are you upset with just the 2003 supercharged? Because, i've ridden in a 2000 supercharged with exhaust with 7" lift and 35's and it spanks my stock 2002. i think you might be kidding yourself, or rationalizing a reason not to blow all that money...

Did you test drive one there? Last I heard they only had a supercharged Sequoia. I'm not too fond of Grant...is there anyone else there with the authority to take a test run with the truck?
The 03 Tundra had about 850 miles when I test drove it. The Sequoia was an 02 with about 4,000 miles They sold the Sequoia, the Sequoia had pinging problems and needed a computer up grade, I was told, I will be dropping my 2000 Tundra off so as to let Grant and his manager test drive it. I am sure they will be wondering what is up with there 03 after a drive in my 2000. I think something is not operating correctly in the 03. It just feels slow. my 2000 feels quick!!!
I didn't realize the one you test drove was at Stevens Creek. I haven't been around here much, but last I heard they hadn't released a supercharger for the 03. Maybe they are just fine tuning it. I'm sure my 2000 is not faster than it...but ya never know. So Grant actually agreeed to test drive your truck to see if it is quicker than their supercharged 03? That's pretty cool of them...
Stopped today at Stevens Creek Toyota near 4:00 PM, I Tossed Grant my keys to the 2000 Tundra and told him to go for a drive. Grant quickly found his manager and they both took off in my 2000 Tundra, after about 10 minutes they returned and his manager said,"Your 2000 is definately quicker to 35 mph that the Supercharged 2003 Tundra, I think the 2003 is faster after that".
I find it hard to believe that the Supercharged 2003 could be producing an extra 100 HP and 100 lbs of torque.
I Recieved a call from Grant this morning from Stevens Creek Toyota parts dept, he had been talking to Bob Gardner of TRD, about the acceleration of the new 2003 Supercharged Tundra, and how the stock 2000 Tundra pulls stronger. TRD and Stevens Creek Toyota will try to find out what is causing the Supercharged 2003 to have less acceleration.
if you dont like the acceleration of the sc on all models get nitorusfed's overdrive pulley. it increases boost to 13 psi and boost kicks in 800 rpms quicker. i have seen a 4x4 2000 with the trd piggyback (not the unichip), run 13.5 in the quarter @ 105 mph well the unichip only controled the top speed and minor fuel.
you can even use a boost contoler to graduate boost if you dont want to run 13 psi all the time. if you have a dual port actuator all you do is splice into the vacume line that connects to the lower vacume port and t it in to the vacume line that feeds the electrical delco remy sensor from the oposite side . here you can add a common manual boost controler to lower from the 13 psi the pulleys make. i think the lowest you can take it is 4 psi and raise it to 13 psi. (note this will only work if you have the overdrive pulleys. otherwise it will only lower the boost from the stock 7 psi. but if you are a fuel conservative you can benifit from this mod. ) this mod can add about 20hp and about 60 torque. you can email mike @ mavila1@houston.rr.com
the truck is just supercharged no bottle at all. the xtra boost and fuel tunning made all that much power. shoot if it had a bottle it would have done two things for sure. 1 gone faster than 13's or boooom!./ lol.. fuel and timming are crucial . you have to be able to change it to suit the xtra boost.
There are no answers yet, Grant told me he had talked to TRD today. he said they were still looking into it.
For the substancial cost of the Supercharger I was expecting an increase in performance, ( Quicker throttle response and Spirited Acceleration). I did not notice much, if any increase...
