I just purchased a TRD limited slip 3rd member off ebay for $399.00 (after $400 dollar core). It is brand new in the box. I talked to the dealer and he said he would put it in for $200. I was looking in the workshop manual and it looks like it is fairly straight foreward. remove the 4 bolts holding the backing plate on, remove brake line and brake cable, remove ABS sensor and then pull out the shaft. Likewise on the opposite side. Then disconnect the drive shaft remove the bolts and pull out the 3rd member. Reinstall in opposite procedure. My question to anyone that has done this or worked on diff before. Do I have to take the brakes apart or can I remove them as one unit with the backing plate? Do I have to replace the seals or can I reuse since I am just pulling out the shafts just far enough to pull out the diff. The only reason I would consider the dealer is then it would have the warranty. Any thoughts?
Real easy to install. Go to www.toy4x4.net. There's a write-up on a Lock Right Locker install. Which should be very much, if not exactly, the same procedure as the TRD LSD. The write up was done by Mike Ross(Norcal pres of TTORA). He and I installed it in my tundra in about 3 hours(would've taken sooner but we chit-chatted, took pics and had lunch). I'm in the Bay Area, where are you? If you want we can get a wrench-a-thon going at someone's house for you.
We disconnected the brake lines only, to pull the shafts out far enough. You do not need to disassemble the brake drum. I did not replace my seals and have no leaks since. If you're interested on having a wrench-a-thon on your truck, let me know and we'll schedule a date and place.
$399, thats a great price for complete third member. Rather, than just the LSD unit itself. The complete third member usually costs around $1200 at the dealership and you get $400 back when you turn in the core, totaling $800.
Just to make sure, you might want to check with the seller if it's the complete member. I did a buy it now on ebay for a complete third member and in actuallity, the seller only had the LSD unit itself. The seller ended up refunding my money back.
I installed a third member limited slip in my truck. It was not difficult. Be warned though, no instructions come with the third member off of ebay.
My third member was sold by Gullo Toyota dealership in Conroe, Texas on ebay. They credited my credit card account when the core was returned just like they advertised. I asked if the factory warranty would be voided if I installed the LSD myself. According to Gullo, TRD offers a one year unlimited mileage warranty on the unit. They did not answer the question my remaining factory warranty would be voided.
The TRD third member is a rebuilt unit. On my particular unit, the ring and pinion gear were new. TRD subcontracted the manufacture of the LSD to Eaton Corp. It is possible to get replacement parts for the LSD.
You might need to buy the thin gasket that goes between the third member and bell housing. Some people just use silicone glue to seal the joint. Both surfaces are machined smooth. I would not recommend using silicone on these surfaces since most of the glue will be squeezed out when the bolts are tightened. The limited slip oil additive is compatable with syn. gear oil. I have heard that one should not put syn. gear oil in a differential with a TRD LSD. I think the four nuts that hold the axle and brake asy. to the rear differential should be replaced with new ones. They are one time use nuts. There are two O rings that are used to seal the axle bearings by the brake assembly to the differential housing. They can be reused if they are not damaged.
So far I have 600 miles on the new third member with no problems. If your truck is out of warranty, I would encourage the truck owner to do the installation themselves. If your truck is in warranty, you are in a gray area if the rear differential fails.

Then you bought a lock-right from some poor fool who had ordered it, then his truck was wrecked a week before it arrived.
Nice write-up though, even easier than I thought it would be.
I had mine installed at the dealership. But, I purchased the TRD LSD through a gear shop in Edmonton. I paid 600.00 canadian.
The install was a cluster**** though. Aparently you will need the carrier bearings as they have to use a puller to remove the old ones and they can't guarantee they will be able to re-use the old ones. I opted to replace those. Toyota was the only place I could find a set that would fit. The gear shop sold me a set of the part number that was suppose to work but it was the totally wrong part....so says the dealer, hense I had them re order the correct one and it now works perfectly.
It was the complete third member or pumkin. It shipped right away and I have not had any problems. I am going to have the dealer install it on Friday. I am sure you could do it yourself, I just want the warrantty and my dealer is going to put it in for $200. I will let you all know about the return process and how well it works.
I wonder if this guy is buying up the TRD limited slips themselves and installing them on used third members then selling them to the public for cheap. I would be leery of that because if he doesn’t set those teeth right you will have problems with nothing to fall back on.

I agree but it came in the TRD box. That is another reason I am having the dealer install it. I bought it from a Toyota dealer therefore it will carry the full warranty.
It is easy to install, but for $200 at the dealer and a warrentee to go with it, defininitely have them do it. What some people say is easy to install, is often difficult for others. It all depends on experience and sometimes a good selection of tools. If you feel comfortable attempting it, go ahead. But if you have any doubts, then pay the $200 and have a piece of mind that its covered under warrentee. Just my opinion. Good luck.
It appeared to be new. It was installed by the dealer. I is nice to be able to accellerate around corners. It ended up costing a little more than first anticipated. 400 for the unit, 100 in shipping back and forth and 200 to put it in. It is still about 500 cheaper than if I went to the dealer though. Anyways works great just waiting for my deposit.
