Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Switching Exhaust Systems", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I just purchased a 2003 Tundra SR5 Access Cab without the TRD Performance Exhaust package. A coworker of mine recently bought a used 2001 Tundra with the TRD dual exhaust. He's not a big fan of the rumble it gives him and says he likes the way mine sounds better.
My question is, if we were to switch exhaust systems, would there be any major modifications needed to be done or would it be an easy switch between the two trucks? Could we just unbolt our respective exhaust systems and switch them out no problem?
I've been wanting to upgrade my exhaust system and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to do it for free. Any information regarding this will be appeciated.
what type of exhaust system do you have??? If your talking trading your stock 03 for his 2001 trd dual exhaust.HOP ALL OVER IT!!!!! You might have to replace some cheap flanges but bolt off bolt on is right.Especially if its for free.
hi brian, i just recently purchased and installed a flowmaster cat back system, and the fellow at smmit racing specifically made sure it was going on a 2000-2001 toyo tundra yrs truck. The system i have has a resonator before the muffler used for tuning and resonation.I'm not sure how the trd system is designed so i don't know if u can just change exhaust without some engine performance issues. I think 2003 went to a different emissions with the exaust........just my 2 cents. Good luck

Torque is what accelerates a vehicle from a stop not horsepower. Horsepower is a mathematical number derived from Torque * rpm / 5252 and is a measure of how much work can be done over time.
I've installed the TRD duals and I didn't like them because I lost a very noticeable amount of low-end torque. That was my experience. The low-end snap that I had off the line with the stock exhaust was gone with the TRD duals.

Hey V8,
I see you use a spintech muffler on your Tundra. How is the sound and how would it compare to the Gibson. I am planning on getting in on the header group buy, but I do not want an earth shaking rumble for my Tundra for I am pretty conservative in this regards. Thanks, Jose
The sound to me is just perfect because it doesn’t drone on the highway like my TRD duals did the unlike the TRD duals were I lost power I gained low-end power with this Spintech muffler. I gained 12-ft. lbs. of peak torque and gained across the entire RPM band (dyno proven). For loudness on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the stock muffler and 10 being an open exhaust I would say the Spintech Sportsman XL muffler is about a 3-3.5. The TRD duals are a 4 when new and a 5.5 with 20k miles on them. The Spintech muffler gives me that perfect V8 sound but I can still listen to my radio at normal listening levels because it fades away at a cruise. When I get on the throttle it comes alive. As the RPM climbs the sound changes from a deep pitched bass sound to a high pitched wail. Just awesome! The muffler also only cost me $99 + shipping too.
I have never heard the Gibson exhaust so I cannot relate to it only the TRD duals. I didn’t care for the sound the TRD duals made. To me they were too loud and didn’t give me that nice V8 sound I like. The TRD duals also get louder over time because the glass packing inside breaks down over time.
I’ve also had the JBA Evol stainless steel exhaust with 2.5” piping (stock it 2.25”) and it was OK. The sound was deeper than the Spintech but louder too. It droned on the highway but not as bad as the TRD duals did. I also felt like I lost just a little bit of low-end torque compared to the Spintech muffler. It’s been my experience that when you increase the size of the exhaust piping on the Tundra you loose low-end torque with the stock exhaust manifolds. Some say that you gain this back with headers but if that’s true than I would think that those headers in conjunction with 2.25” piping would make more low-end torque when compared to 2.5’ piping with headers.

Hey V8,
Thank you for the response, I was also thinking on purchasing the jba headers thru the group deal. Will this work well with the spintech muflfler and also do you have the part number handy for the muffler I would need. Thank You
Go to http://www.spintechmufflers.com and take a look at what they have. I would get the Sportsman Street XL ---- 3222XL 2.25” center inlet and 2.25” side exit. They sell these in aluminum coated steel for $99 and 304 stainless steel for ~$ 180. The Aluminum coated steel muffler is what I have. They are made of 16 gauge steel and they are built like tanks!
Most people here lose low-end torque or don’t gain any low-end torque with an exhaust system because they go bigger with the piping. They then buy headers to help regain the loss only to get mildly better torque than what they had stock. Putting a stock sized higher flow muffler on in place of the stock muffler is proven to give you gains in torque. With the headers you will boost torque even more. The headers are dyno proven to give you 20-ft. lbs. of peak torque with large gains even in the low-rpm band were we need it most. This Spintech muffler is dyno proven to give me 12-ft. lbs. of torque @ 3400 RPM with a gain across the entire RPM band. The group buy is a great deal with the headers only costing $425 shipped or $550 coated and shipped. Time is running out on the group buy too!

Hey V8,
Looks like I missed out on the header buy cause my wife gave birth my new Son Bradley-6lbs 15oz. Is it a difficult task to replace the stock muffler with the spintech one? I am buying the 3222XL.
You might still be able to get in on that group buy if you call ASAP. It was a pain to do the install myself and if I had to do it again I would pay a muffler shop to do it next time. Yes get the 3222XL.
Congratulations on the birth of your son.

v8,
I currently have stock exhaust on my '02 4x4 and I'm considering the 3222XL.
You say the install was a pain ... was there any special fabrication and/or parts that you needed to make this fit-up?
I'll probably still have a shop do the work, but I want to get an idea if there ary any special circumstances to getting this installed.
