It can come on for lots and lots of reasons. Autozone will scan your computer for free and tell you the exact reason. But most likely an oxygen sensor went bad. Usually, when one goes bad the others aren't too far off either.
seems like it could be an o2 sensor. Light went out today for no apparent reason. have been experiencing an extremely low idle lately. Any other clues?
Go to an Autozone and they will do a ODBII scan for you for free. If not give me a holler and maybe we can hook up this weekend and I'll scan it with mine.
I'd bet that it is an O2 sensor. Mine just came on too. I have already replace the 1 bank 2 sensor now its the other side.

If you can, take it to another dealer and point out TSB EG019-02 (oxygen sensors have been redesigned), they may fix it for free.
Also, since it looks like you live in California, ask if oxygen sensors are covered under the longer emissions warranty (assuming even that warranty hasn't expired for you yet).
Finally, get ready, the others probably aren't far off from failing as well.
Your light shut off by it's self, that tells me it was more than likely a lose gas cap or something, vehicles these days are so damn touchy about the gas cap. You also stated that your idle or something was off, if so maybe something really is wrong, or could be in your head because the light was on?

Does anyone know if Toyota has fixed this problem yet? A while ago on this forum I heard that there was a TSB for the premature O2 sensor failure problems.
My check engine light was on and I had to get my 2000 Tundra inspected, come to find out the O2 sensor was out, Bank 2 / #1 sensor, it was going to cost way to much to get it done at a dealership so I changed it myself, I ran into so much trouble with this, the O2 sensor was jammed big time it was such a pain while trying to get that out my exhaust manifold cracks. So I have to buy a new one and replace that, too. End result ... 30 miles later my check engine light is back on, same sensor and same code 155. How could that be?
Rbox, do a search on this topic. I could swear somebody said you need to clear the error code from the trucks computer after changing the sensor to get rid of the check engine light. Could be wrong, but worth a look. -Bri
