Default Borla perfomance exhaust from factory

Hello everyone...I am a new owner of a 03' Tundra TRD 4X4 SR5 and I am extremely happy with my purchase...I live in Ohio currently, but purchased my Tundra a few days ago in Georgia..One thing about my Tundra that is totally different than the Tundra's from my region is that it came with a factory installed Borla Performance exhaust and air filter...its a 769.99 option...it has duel stainless tips coming out the rear...At first I really liked it, but now the sound is a little to loud for my tastes..dont get me wrong, its sounds great, but I would like a more conservative sound than this...Is there any type of alteration to keep this exhaust system (since I paid for it) to make it quieter and less harsh? The vibration is just enough to get on my nerves...Does anyone else have this factory installed option and is yours as loud as mine? Thanks for all your help. Paul

Hi Paul,
Congratulations on your new Tundra!!....and welcome to TS.

Wow!....That's pretty cool..Borla's installed as an option. You mentioned purchasing it in Georgia. I think that's SE Toyota. Sounds like a Distributor installed option.
I have the Borla catback also, which I ordered through Summit and had installed locally. I kept the original muffler and tailpipe, just in case I decide to reinstall later on.
Regarding your question about muffling the Borla to a quieter tone. I don't think you can, as the muffler itself is designed to emit a throaty exhaust note. You don't have to replace the tailpipes, but you could always replace just the muffler itself with a stock Tundra or aftermarket muffler. Definitely hold on to the Borla muffler though, if you decide to replace it, because it's made of stainless steel and will last forever.
As for the exhaust note, I like the loud throaty exhaust note you get from a V8, equipped with catbacks like Borla, Flows or TRD.

Good luck on getting it modified to your satisfaction. You have lots of options and it's not an expensive fix.

The cheapest option would probably be just having a different muffler put on at a muffler shop. You could always try to sell it and buy a TRD exhaust. They are a little quieter than the Borla. Perhaps somebody here would be willing to trade with you. You could always just go back to stock, but you would loose the cool tips that the Borla has.

As already said, your Borla is not factory installed...it's either dealer installed or installed by the regional distributor*.

You can ask a muffler shop if they can install a small muffler in the pipe to serve as a resonator to reduce the noise level, and leave your Borla muffler in place.

*There are only two regional distributors remaining, Gulf States and Southeast. I think that these cover five states each, and Toyotas in the rest of the country are distributed by Toyota Motor Sales.
SouthEast
Gulf States
