Default Question: Idle at 1500 on cold start-up

Hi - I just bought a 2008 5.7 DC Tundra SR5 2WD. I'm surprised how high the engine revs on start-up. If I wait a minute or two the rev drops to 750 or 500, but the initial speed is 1500 or slightly higher. I live down south, and this is happening in 70 degree weather. Is this normal? The manual also suggests that you should warm up your vehicle by driving, not idling - that seems like a weird concept, especially if it is revving high initially.

Its to warm up your catalytic convertors, unless its already 900 degrees outside, its gonna need to warm them up. Driving well produce more heat through them, thus heating them up faster. And the faster they heat up the less polluting your doing, and the EPA smiles and says thank you.

Thanks for the reply! I'm glad it all makes sense, and we are doing our part to somewhat save the environment.

Thanks again,
Luther

Once your oil pressure stabilizes you should be OK to drive! it should go 1/2 way up on Gage then go down just below 1/2 way on Gage then it's OK to drive! Long idle will only waist gasoline and it only takes a couple miles for it to warm up no matter where ya live !

My old 4.7 does the same thing, although not quite as high as yours. Since it is new, give it a while and it will likely settle down.
