Unhappy Squeal when cold!

Need some advice:

Lately, when I've started my '01 Tundra, a noticeable squeal starts from under the hood. I have located it around the serpentine belt/compressor area. It usually lasts for about 2-3 minutes and then disapppears. Not real loud but very noticable. I have 23,500 miles on the 4.7 and have never had this problem before. I fear it's the oil in the compressor not getting where it needs to (being sealed) until it gets warmed up.

I've made a point in all my vehicles not to shut it off with the compressor engaged...always turn it off a few miles away from home. Funny thing is that I really don't use the compressor that much. I car pooled the other day with a few guys and had the A/C on for the 300 mile trek and the next day this squealin' crap starts!

Any ideas before I contact the dealer? It's been trouble free until now and I'd like to get this documented before my warranty runs out. I suspect I'll have to leave it overnight to have them duplicate it. Anyone else have this problem?

Your help/advice is appreciated.

Its the belt. Same thing happened to mine at about the same mileage. The dealer replaced my belt for free and it went away.

Smile R/R Serpintine Belt

Thanks,
It seems like this is a common problem I didn't know about. Beats R/R the compressor!! I appreciate all your quick responses. I'll go see the dealer for another serp. belt.

Replaced my serpentine belt this past weekend at 41k. The Goodyear Gatorback Poly-V #4060905 was $27.99 from Autozone plus 20 minutes of my time. No more squealing now! I keep the old belt in my truck as a spare though.

Sounds like mine needs one too. Other than the noise, is there any wrong with letting it be until it's really bad? I had heard that it's a result of "glazing" on the belt and doesn't mean the belt is near death.

I can't imagine there being any negative side effects other than the noise. There were absolutely no cracks in my belt, just a little glazing. My belt was also within limits on the auto-tensior pulley markings, so all was good. I just didn't like the noise!

Thumbs up Covered under warranty

Called the local Toyota Dealer in central Missouri, got a service manager, described the problem....said that many had the same problem and that the serpintine belt was suspect.....scheduled a change of the belt this Thursday sight unseen.

Moral: The power of this forum is evident when you can call the service manager and he actually can document the problem and schedule a fix!!! Can't say that about my 2 decade experience with my previous oil stained hands working on Chevys and the dealerships that ran me around the chevy post!!!

Love that Toyota....actually stands behind what they sell!

My 2001 did the same thing, noisy belt - just 25k miles, no cracks in belt, just very dry and glazed.

$17 at Autozone for the Kelly Springfield belt. Changed it a few days ago, quiet now. Will change on a 2 year cycle.

Think the Toyota dealer here gets $26 a belt over the counter.

Fortunately, the belt change is a 10 minute fix. (20 if you've never done it before).

The only tool you really need is a long handled rachet with a flex fitting/extention on it and the socket. I think it was a 12 or 15 mm socket.

My belt wasn't even really that glazed but it still was noisy. I think it might be the back of the belt that makes all the noise.

Alan
