Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Squeal when cold!", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Lately, when I've started my '01 Tundra, a noticeable squeal starts from under the hood. I have located it around the serpentine belt/compressor area. It usually lasts for about 2-3 minutes and then disapppears. Not real loud but very noticable. I have 23,500 miles on the 4.7 and have never had this problem before. I fear it's the oil in the compressor not getting where it needs to (being sealed) until it gets warmed up.
I've made a point in all my vehicles not to shut it off with the compressor engaged...always turn it off a few miles away from home. Funny thing is that I really don't use the compressor that much. I car pooled the other day with a few guys and had the A/C on for the 300 mile trek and the next day this squealin' crap starts!
Any ideas before I contact the dealer? It's been trouble free until now and I'd like to get this documented before my warranty runs out. I suspect I'll have to leave it overnight to have them duplicate it. Anyone else have this problem?
Your help/advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
It seems like this is a common problem I didn't know about. Beats R/R the compressor!! I appreciate all your quick responses. I'll go see the dealer for another serp. belt.
Originally posted by SATundra Whats the belt cost? I seem to remember someone saying $26. I need one at 41K.
Replaced my serpentine belt this past weekend at 41k. The Goodyear Gatorback Poly-V #4060905 was $27.99 from Autozone plus 20 minutes of my time. No more squealing now! I keep the old belt in my truck as a spare though.

Sounds like mine needs one too. Other than the noise, is there any wrong with letting it be until it's really bad? I had heard that it's a result of "glazing" on the belt and doesn't mean the belt is near death.

I can't imagine there being any negative side effects other than the noise. There were absolutely no cracks in my belt, just a little glazing. My belt was also within limits on the auto-tensior pulley markings, so all was good. I just didn't like the noise!

Called the local Toyota Dealer in central Missouri, got a service manager, described the problem....said that many had the same problem and that the serpintine belt was suspect.....scheduled a change of the belt this Thursday sight unseen.
Moral: The power of this forum is evident when you can call the service manager and he actually can document the problem and schedule a fix!!! Can't say that about my 2 decade experience with my previous oil stained hands working on Chevys and the dealerships that ran me around the chevy post!!!
Love that Toyota....actually stands behind what they sell!
