Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Lets talk speed limiter.........", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
When I bought my truck I bought my engine; I don't need Toyota Motor Corp warranting their speed ethics on me. All of our trucks just start to cruz at around 100 (depending on lift, tires and skill) at 105 the fuel cut off kicks in, I've been able to feather it up to 110, but that’s not cruising. I feel without this problem the truck would be able to crawl into its powerband (above 3000rpm) and then offroading starts to become fun. I'm thinking 140.
I don't have a problem. You are the problem. It is people like you that jeopardize other people lives by driving at excessive speeds. If 105 mph is to slow you need to think about jumping out of an airplane you can probably hit 160 mph if you position your body just right.
Yeah - your a really really bad person. It's people like you who require manufacturers to build limiters into vehicle designs so you can't decide if your tires, skills, equipment, and road conditions are capable of high speed.
; -)
I also find the 105 limiter to be really freakin annoying. If someone could find a way around it I would like to know what it is. Oh, and jumping out of airplanes is fun too.
I don't have a problem with mine either. If you feel the need for speed then buy a porsche, viper, or whatever and go to a race track and try not to kill yourself. Just stay away from the rest of us.
Trucks are for hauling, sports cars are for speed....
By the way, the limiter is stupid, but there's no reason to be goin' over 100mph.
I use my truck to haul my race bikes, and cars. I still wish it would go over 105. If I were to regear the way I want - it will only go about 95 - that would be even worse.
Heheh...going much above 100 in a vehicle with the aerodynamics of a brick, and a suspension not designed for high speed stability, is probably not a good idea. If you wanna haul a**, and not the 4 legged kind in a trailer, get a sports car or a motorcycle.
If you wanna move that fast offroad you're gonna be spending a small fortune, beefing up your truck to handle the beating.
To each their own...just don't endanger others with your antics, please.

You live in Malibu. Where the heck can you take the Tundra over 105? You can't even go more than 5mph on PCH.
To remedy the speed problem...Get some really, really small tires and rims. Maybe that will throw off your speedometer enough so when you are going 105 it will say your going 140

I don't plan to go over 100mph in my Tundra, so I don't care about the limiter.
However, in light of Ford/Firestone, what's the speed rating of the factory-issue tires on a Tundra?
Do truck tires even have a speed rating like passenger cars?
Yes Truck tires have speed ratings, they are just not on the tire I don't think like some passenger car tires have.
I have the BF Goodrich AT tires that have a speed rating of "Q" which means they are only rated up to like 95 MPH.
I have had my truck faster than that, but only twice I think, and my limiter didn't kick in even after 107, but then I had to slow down anyway. I doubt I will ever see that speed again, had to try it atleast once.
I agree with most others, if you want speed, get a motorcycle.

Key Word Off Road, I can leave the beach and head out to Gorman, or even into the depths of the high dessert. All of our buddies push our trucks to the limits, thats why I bought a Tundra in the first place; to be able to keep up with our driving habits. I don't mean to harm the average civilian on the streets, but out in no mans land there is what we call freedom.
Regarding top speed, my Lightning is drag limited to ~145 mph, with 3.73 rear end, overdrive, and 380hp/450tq. My guess is that the Tundra, if electronic limiters are disabled, can probably hit close to 120-125 mph (~4000 rpm), but aerodynamics and gearing will play a big role. I've driven the Tundra to 100 mph for short periods, and it runs smooth, but if a tire fails at that speed, the truck will be history. Our trucks sit high enough, that if a front tire goes out, the truck's probably gonna flip end over end, if conditions are right.
Lightning are the new Lightnings limited to 145 by the puter or by aero? My 94 was limited to 115mph (puter) and well there was much more there. I ran 3" exhaust from the factory converters back to 3" split tips and that engine (351W) really came to life. Any way that was a fun walk down memory lane......
P.S. I don't think I will be doing 105 anytime soon I just put some ARE Chrome sliders (16x8) W/285/75/R16 Nitto tires....I think 105 would be much to fast for them big 'ol tires.
