Default Trans and Locker ?'s

I have a 03 Auto V6 Tundra 4x2 my question what size is the rear end is it a 7.5'' or 8'' and what locker is the best for some light off-roading like going in the sand and for better dry road traction. And my other question is does the Taco, Runner and Tundra have the same transmission if so can the valve bodies be swaped. The reason is I might have the trans bullet proofed by www.level10.com (check www.Gadgetonline.com for more info)
and I have to send them the valve body to them to work on it and I do not want my truck to be down.

Zach

I assume the V6 engine uses the same tranny regardless of the appliation. Power trax makes a good locker but its always engaged (eats tires and tires always chirp in turns). Your looking at about $400 for a selectable unit.

Ill say this....

I dont want to discourage from buying it if this is really what you want but here are a few things to know before you buy...

I have one and so does my buddy and tire wear is faster than stock, not real bad but noticable.

yes it does unlock, once youve started turning so the begining of your turns you have chirpy tires and while your turning its constantly locking and un locking, if you look at the spider gear replacements youll see what I mean (they are hevily notched). The locking and un locking is quite noisy however with the stereo on at a moderate level its not noticable.

You definatly have to take turns slower due to the fact that the unlocking of the diff has a slight lag to it. However with no other cars around its fun to spin out in the rain and snow and off road.

Long turns on a freeway or at freeway speeds are hairy, the back ends keeps wanting to slide out, you just gotta watch it and slow it down a tad. My buddy (one of the most cautious drivers around) spun a 180 on a freeway on ramp and i was looking right at him, a very hairy situation.

we both noticed extreeme clutch wear. A clutch wont last more than year, and the original clutch lasted 150K miles on an open diff. One Center Force dual friction clutch went out in about 7 months and a stock toyota clutch went out in about 3.

These were just some things to consider. BTW we both still have the units installed (1989 and 1991 toyota 4x4's) and are very happy with them regardless of a few downfalls.

DAMN thats kinda scary because most of the roads here on Guam are made from coral and when it rains I slide out very easely on these roads. Also I drive kinda fast I think I have to really choose what I want Traction or Saftey.

I have the Lock Right locker in my tundra and the descriptions thecarguy provided are true. However, it's not too bad. I have a heavy foot myself and I have not spun the truck(knock on wood). The advantages offroad are great. I've gone through obstacles where I would need momentum and or the tires would spin. I don't regret installing it. It's affordable and easy to install. You can go to www.toy4x4.net to check out the write up on the install. Mike Ross(Pres. of the Norcal TTORA chapter) helped me install it. I got the locker from another TS member unused for $280.

Mike

I got mine from downey for $250. The advantages highly out weigh the few downfalls.

Default Powertrax

the powertrax noslip system is better than the lockright. it is more expensive, but in the long run it is better on the road so it won't eat tires as fast. Plus, selectable lockers start at about $650.

No, the Powertrax is not an LSD. It is a full locker, but it is made to have better on road manners.

http://www.4x4wire.com/reviews/no-slip/

This link will let you read the install of a noslip, and the review of it on and off-road.
