Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Resonator Removal ????????", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I've tried a lot of searching but can't find the answer I'm looking for. I have the TRD cat-back dual exhaust, and am wondering if removing the resonator and replacing with a straight piece improves performance or not. Does the sound change at all too? Thanks for the help.
I'm in the same situation. At first I thought about removing the resonator on the TRD dual setup and also the one on the y-pipe . In the threads I thought I read about someone taking off at least one of the resonators, and he complained his truck got very loud.
I like the way the TRD duals sound now, and they seem to get louder the more I drive anyway. The thing I really like the most about TRD duals is that they really only get loud when you put your foot into it.
If you want to open your exhaust up some more, get a set of JBA headers. My dad has the TRD duals on his truck and put a set of JBA's on. His exhaust bumped up quite a few decibils, but once again only when he puts his foot into it. There's a group buy going on right now if you are interested.

The resonator is much like a straight through muffler. If a straight pipe does give you any gains it’s going to be so small that you will never know the difference. You would gain more power by putting your stock exhaust system back on. The TRD duals cost you low-end power!

How about the sound? Is the resonator just there to quiet it down a little? If I cut it out and replace with some straight pipe, will it make the exhaust any louder?

Yes a resonator is there to help quiet the sound down. At straight pipe will be louder.

I had my cut out when I just had a single exit flowmaster and it made the truck louder, but that was what I was looking for. But its not a bad sounding loud. I liked it a lot before I got the dual setup I have now.
I have the Bassani split sides and there is a little bolt that holds the resonators in. For the life of me I cant get the bloody things out. ANyone have any ideas?
