Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "power and speed needed", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
im sure most of you look down on people like me. i street race regularly on a closed street, it is a supervised event by the police, and am needing more power. i just get stomped every time. i wanted the fastest truck i could buy stock, and the tundra was it, but now i have been bitten by the mod bug! i have the v-8 and every time i try to race most cars, mainly stockers, i get stomped. stock z-28s just leave me way behind, and i want to try to hang with them. so i guess now onto my question. i am a high school student, about to graduate and move onto college, and cant stand to be this slow!!!! I HAVE A VERY LIMITED BUDGET!! i am already thinking of intake mod, throttle body spacer, headers and a custom exhaust, anyhting else you guys can think of? i know you guys are goin to say if you want a sports car buy one, but i need a truck to tow my boat, and run my lawnmowing business. is there anything im overlooking? im looking into nitrous, but its not looking promising, anyone got an answer to that? thanks guys for the help.
Looks like your trying to move into a class you don't belong, why not just limit what you race, just trucks would the way to go. Even adding all those things won't let you stay with a good street rod with all the weight your moving.
With a very limited budget, there's not much you can do with the Tundra beyond what you've mentioned. The JBA Y pipe might help, nobody's really done anything with it yet so there's no word on it. The Tundra doesn't seem to respond as well to the typical mod-pattern that works on other vehicles.
Non-specialty trucks generally won't run like you're looking for without significant modifications. (read lots of $$$ worth of mods) I say non-specialty because obviously things like the Cyclone and the Lightning are not your typical truck.
The other aspect is is that if you still want it to be able to tow your boat and run your lawnmowing business, you definitely don't want to get crazy with your mods or you might eat into its durability and then you'll be stuck with a very different expense...
Don't look down on you at all, it's much more responsible of you to run in supervised street races than to do it out on the public roads. Just recently a couple of street-racers out here were convicted on Manslaughter charges in the death of two people who were unfortunate enough to cross their path at the wrong time. The estimated speed at the time of the collision was upwards of 75mph on a city street...
Wes
What I think you shoud do is look at droping the weight of your truck when you race like take out the spare tire and all the things that will make your truck heavy and think about getting lighter rims and tires that will help a lot. I am 19 yrs and I also race to and mine is a v6 I could hang with my firends civic with intake and wires you should also concider racing other trucks and cars that are not like the Z28 you are WAY out of your league.
ALSO... you should check out www.spintechmufflers.com V8toilet netted 13 tq and like 3 hp with the muffler.
thanks for the responses guys, i know z-28 is way outta my league, but that was just an example, and i dont race just fast cars like those!! i was just given you guys an idea. as for the spintech mufflers i will look into those. thanks for the concern of reliability, with the mods i listed should i be ok in that department? this truck also has a 5 hour drive to college and back starting in the fall. thanks for the help and advice guys
Wes, all these guys are right - the cheapest, and one of the best things you can do is to drop some weight - this can make a lot bigger difference than most people give it credit for.
On the other hand, as already mentioned, unless you got big big bucks to blow for some very extensive modifications, the tundra just is not going to be able to keep up with any hi performance cars - I think the idea about sticking to a certain class (racing trucks) is a good one -
BTW - this is off the topic, but I test drove a BMW M3 a couple days ago with my pops - it was used - I think a 2001, or 2002, but they wanted 25K for it - which is a helluva deal - that thing is probably one of the fastest factory cars I've ever driven - god damn - and I've had access to some pretty damn fast cars - it *felt* faster than the 120,000 dollar porsche my mom's boss owns - which I drove a couple years ago - I just cannot believe how quick that thing was - that's what you should trade your tundra in for if you want to smoke some Z28's...
I remember a while ago I read in a magazine where someone took the bed off of their truck and ran a before and after at the drag strip. Taking the bed off was a big help. I don't remember exactly how much, but it made a sizeable difference. It is probably not something you want to do too often though.
You may also want to check out the under drive pulleys. For 130 it aint a bad deal. Other than that nitrous is a good, inexpensive way to add power. I would be concerned with reliabilty though. It only comes on when you want it to though. Perhaps you can email ex-member Nitrousfed and ask how the nitrous on his truck worked.
wes, just so you know, I aint hatin. I think it is cool to make a truck go fast. Lots of people say get a car that goes fast. That is too easy. You don't see lots of FAST trucks which is what makes them so sweet. I like stuff that is different.
What are you going to be studying in college?

but back on topic, i think ill just stick with the power adders listed, and keep it reliable, keep the bed, maybe get a cover for it so i wont get as much resistance with the tailgate, but i am goin to be haulin around a dirt bike, gear, and cocasionally a ducati 993, so i need the bed!! thanks for all the help guys
