Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Exhaust Manifold Gasket", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The local mechanic wants $260 to change the left side exhaust manifold gasket. Does that seem outrageous or has it just been that long since I paid for a mechanic to do repair for me?

I would say that's a little pricey. My dad paid $250 total for a certified master mechanic to install his JBA header's. Might as well put on a set of headers while your changing out the manifold gaskets.

OK, so at $75/hour, this mechanic is saying it's gonna take him ~3.4 hours to change ONE GASKET? Hmmm... I'd call your dealer and ask them what the estimated labor charge would be for the same job. (At least this will give you an estimate.) While you're at it, ask them what the price is for the gasket. (I would imagine they come in a set of two.) Perhaps he's marking that up as well?
BTW, zebra1550 has an excellent point! If you're interested in getting into a Group Buy for JBA headers, see the link in my sig below...
Seee-ya,
Jim.

Well, I took the plunge and did it myself, well, at least half so far. There's a race to watch so I stopped.
Can't see any obvious leaks in the gasket or any cracks in the manifold. Let's hope it is so small that I can't see it. Is there anything else I ought to look for?
Dudeboy, thanks for the tip. I didn't have to lift the engine and all the studs stayed in the head where they belong.

They crack right where the small flange is at the cylinder port end of the manifold tubes. Hold it up to a strong light and look for a hair line crack. I think they usually crack at the one of the end tubes. Mine was at the front cylinder on the driver's side.

No apparent cracks. Used a million candlepower spotlight. Spent a lot of time to make sure all the carbon was scraped off the sealing surfaces. Lots of buildup after 106,000 miles.
Seems to be fixed :knock on wood: now.
I'm outta here and $260 richer.
