Default Tundra 4.7 to tH400

Anyone swap one in yet? I dont trust the stock trans to hold up to any off-road abuse..

If it doesn't, find a component AT rebuilder that is willing to upgrade/modified the OE tranny for your driving style. I wouldn't cripple the vehicle with a 3-speed. If you want the th400, toss in a SBC while you're at it.

Usually a good ATF cooler, synthetic fluids, a temp gauge, a full flow inline filter, shift kit...... will make a lemon of a tranny into a jewel.

there is nothing to make the tundra trans any stronger, there are minimal aftermarket parts and difficult to find.

TH400 would be perfect for off-road racing and thats all my tundra is for. And they can be built to handle 800hp and still cost less than a stock tundra tranny. So I dont see why its a bad idea. I cant (wont) run a chevy engine as its not allowed in the class im racing in.

Yeah .......there are mods to make the Tundra's transmission stronger. All up to a 9 sec truck. That alone probably would be around 800-1000 hp. IPT trans. States this in the advertising on their website, the 9 sec (or 10) quote for the Toyota Tundra transmission. There is Level 10 also but they are way overpriced. Send the valvebody in. Or if you have beaten the transmission already. Get that rebuilt , checked on , then get the valvebody out and sent off to IPT.

How is you're Tundra gonna make 400hp anyhow without a TRD supercharger or some other supercharger kit, turbo, etc. (which isn't allowed anyhow). You gonna run a stroker kit or somethin? Aggressive cams, etc. Beef up the pistons, rods with a Lextreme kit, Whatcha doing or got planned?

You know you can get Lextreme (David) to build you one of those adapters like he's done before on his own vehicles. Or put a manual 6speed Getrag transmission (Toyota Supra transmision) in there, This way you'll be able to easily go 80 - 140mph in the desert with the baja suspension setup you are building. You'd probably get better mileage too if they allow a 6 speed.

I've got a Th400 on my 4.7LTT and believe me it was a very simple install. The V160 would be unvelievably good, we're building one of those now as well using our adapter plate.

Do you have a link to your install or products?

Thanks,
Josh

Im not worried too much about the hp the motor makes as this isnt a drag car, Im worried about the constant loading and un-loading of the rear end, OD gear is super weak, and no manual valve-body is made for the stock trans. The constant hunting for gears will destroy it in no time. I could build a th400 will solid tailshaft and manual reverse valvebody for $500 and not have to worry about an electronic transmission, cant even rebuild the tundra for that to stock specs.

Here we go.

So far the Th400 with the V8 is a real joy to drive. There's a couple of tricks of the trade to make it fit, but all in all I put it in by myself with a trans jack and some elbow grease.

Here's a full front shot of the porn.

Your tranny has a button to lock out the overdrive which stops the gear hunting.

What about 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear? With a manual valve body i can shift the trans into a gear and it will stay there no matter what, no one make a manual VB for the tundra so it would shift for me in 1st 2nd 3rd thus imploding trans...

This isnt a daily driven street queen.. here are some pics..
