Engine & DrivetrainDiscussions about the engine and drivetrain of your vehicle.
This is a discussion thread titled "Is the V6, 5SP combo realible?", within the Engine & Drivetrain forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
I'm looking to purchase a new Base or a Access Cab Tundra with the V6, manual 5 speed combo in 2WD. What has been the conclusion on this combo's reliability? Is there enough power available? any specific problems? I'm new to this so please bare w/ me.
thanks,
Motoretro
I had this combo in a T-100 - Same V6 and probably same manual tranny but not sure? It was a flawless combo!!!! I used it extensively for towing fifth wheel and camper trailers with the largest one weighing in at 4400 pounds. Towed from NC to FL, Las Vegas, Yellowstone, Glacier, etc. without any problems.
I wish the V8 was offered with a manual tranny!! Its better for towing and gives better MPGs.
I'm very consistant at 18mpg combined driving and have gotten as much as 24mpg with a full load of luggage for two people, coolers, chairs and the usual.
I also have a shell and carpet kit that adds to the overall weight by about 300lbs.
I have done mountain driving with no problem, usually in 4th gear and occasionaly 3rd.
It's quiet, solid, and smooth.
BUT, the one problem may be finding one. In 2002 there were only 142 made in any one color, V6, access, 2wd.
It took me about a month and a half to work with a dealer to get one.
Good luck.
Chuck

I have a v6 4x4 access cab 5-speed, 64k miles, and it works great. Definitely enough power with the manual, and you just feel that much cooler with a stick. I do wish I had the V8 sometimes, and if they offered it in a manual I would get it, but the V6 with a manual is perfect for me.
Motoretro, first, welcome to the boards! You will find, if you do get a Tundra, that ALL you ever need to know can be found here. I have a 2001 access cab with the stick and have 40,000 miles with no problems. I average over 20mpg on crappy California gas. The truck has plenty of power for me including hauling truckloads of plywood and lumber. The ride is fantastic and my truck still feels brand new. I ordered mine from my local dealer and had to wait over four months, but good things take time. WB
Motoretro.... I have an early 00' (sept 99) 3.4 / stick / 4x4/ / access with almost 50K miles. Only real prob I had was a failed water pump that was replaced under warranty. My clutch is a bit squeaky, but has never mechanically been a problem. As far as reliability, it starts up, first key turn everyday, has always delivered 18mpg or better around town. Never pings, barks or sputters and is holding up quite well. No complaints here....
I have a v6 standard 4wd and i love it. i take it out in open fields and up hills. not too much power just enough. i would like the v8 but having a v6 in a standard 4wd iss all i can ask for in a truck.
Purchased my Tundra Feb. 2000. Have just over 70,000 miles on it now. It has not been in the shop for a single mechanical failure. Has been the best and most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Paid $16,800 new.
I have kept up with the normal maitenance and replaced my plugs at 35K miles with Bosch Quad Platinum. Still running them and have not had any problems. Also replaced battery and tires. Don't see how it could be any better for me.
I have read many reviews of problems with Oxygen sensors, seat belt retractor, and brakes, but that has not been my experience. I keep thinking that I am due for brake job but not needed yet. I have consistently gotten 20 MPG. Even managed 22 MPG on a trip across southern MO at 70 MPH with a tail wind. Seem to always get better than 20MPG on Interstate or limited access highway.
I am thinking about a V6 access cab next year but having a back seat in a truck does not fit my paradigm. Guess that dates me a bit. Still I think I will make a few test drive to see if I can adjust to the idea. Seems to me back seats are for cars, station wagons (this is what I consider an SUV), and vans. How do you reach the passthrough window with an access cab?
I have a fairly new V6 tundra extra cab with a 5 speed and love it. It has more than enough power for driving around town and on the freeway. The truck also gets great gas mileage. If you ever wanted more power you could always supercharge the truck which would get you close to the performance of a V8. If you live in CA. I know that toyota of escondido and toyota of kearny mesa both have a v6 with a 5 speed. Welcome to TS
Hey Guys:
I have a '02 V6 5sp and love it. I haven't had any problems in nearly 65k miles both around the city and long hauls. I still have the original clutch, and brakes.
